Organizations and Individuals that Support SB691–150 Hours

Testimonials received:

“We cannot let California standards fall behind in the days of the past because times have changed in this new economy.  I fully support implementing the 150-hour rule.  … The California legislature should keep in mind that this will ultimately benefit the public the most.”

I am in favor of the 150-hr requirement, and fully support the effort to make it a requirement for a CPA license in California in order to raise the level of competence level of California CPAs, and to be consistent with the other states' requirements.

I support the 150 hours, not yet a CPA though.  I'm a candidate and we need this change out of substandard classification.

As a CalCPA candidate member and as a future CPA, I am concerned that  California CPAs may be denied the chance to work with clients from
various states due to a "lack" of a proper license.  I urge the  California Legislature to pass a bill mandating the 150-hour license requirement for California CPAs.

Since an overwhelming majority of California CPAs have clients in  other states, it only makes sense to make sure that the licensing of  CPAs in California is in sync with the rest of the country in  requirements for licensure. If we work to make all the states have  the same requirements, it will make it easier for multi-state  businesses and clients to work with any CPA of their choice.   California should not be behind in professional standards but should  be leading the way.

I urge a bill to be passed THIS YEAR so that there all California CPAs  can work with any client in the United States.

Sincerely,
David K. Eckstrom

I urge you to support the 150 unit Pathway 2 as the sole path for licensing.

Most accounting programs take five years to complete and students take many classes in community college and usually have more than the undergrad requirement of approx 120 units. Accountants tend to want to know more so they take more classes, at least I did.

I graduated in 2005 from the CSUN evening program with 169 units.

I strongly agree that California needs to update the CPA licensing requirement to the national standard of 150 hours.  This state has always been a leader, now we have dropped to follower.  Please get us back on track!

I am writing in support of the bill mandating the 150 hour requirement as the only pathway to CPA licensure.  It is important to the profession that CPAs be able to serve client's interests outside of California.  Licensing rules should be standard across the states.

I strongly encourage our California Legislature to pass a bill mandating the 150-hour requirement as the only pathway to licensure.  I’m a 32 year old partner in a local accounting firm and our client reach is global.  We currently serve clients in more than 15 U.S. states, Canada and Australia, and continue to expand using today’s technology.  Not adopting the 150-hour requirement would be a huge step backwards for young and emerging CPA’s in California.

We are Young and Emerging Professionals in public practice with Good Swartz Brown & Berns, a division of J.H. Cohn, LLP.  We are all recent CPA’s or current CPA candidates, and we support California’s move toward greater mobility for CPA’s by requiring all candidates to follow a single pathway with a minimum of 150 units.

Substantial equivalency has been approved by forty-six other states, but this means nothing to us if not adopted by California, as well.  We urge California legislators to continue the momentous wave of support for a single uniform standard of certification.  Support the 150-unit requirement.  Show them there is nothing “substandard” about California CPA’s!

Thank you,

My name is Sofia Joseph and I have been a YEP CalCpa member since January 2008.  I live in Los Angeles; attended CSUDH and completed my BS degree in Business Administration/Accounting in May 2008.  I definitely support the 150-hour education requirement as the only  way to CPA  licensure.  I always thought that Pathway 2 was the way to go, so by the time I graduated I had 162 units and I kept encouraging my fellow students to follow the same path.

So lets hear it for 150!!!

My name is Guzel Ablyazova. I am about to graduate from California State University, Northridge with degree in accountancy. I fully support 150-unit requirement as the only pathway to CPA licensure. A lot of students in accountancy program graduate either with over 150 units or just a few units shy of 150 units. I am graduating with 189 units.
I believe that 150-hour rule would not represent a substantial barrier to enter the profession. Considering current economic conditions, it is very important that California CPAs are able to represent their clients throughout the nation and remain competitive by holding a substantially equivalent CPA license.

We need the 150 hour requirement to enable us to remain competitive with CPAs from other states.  Uniformity allows CPAs with clients or activities in other states to continue to practice.  The legislature should do the right thing and pass the 150 hour requirement.

Currently I work for a CPA firm and attend school with the ambition of becoming a CPA. I completely support the 150 Hour rule. Why should our standards be any lower? The public deserves to have CPA professionals at the top of their game. The road to becoming a CPA is a long one, an additional 150 hours seems like a small price to pay so that we may represent our clients in matters that may be out of CA. Many of our clients do not only have relations in CA, but in many states. If we do not keep up with the highest standards we may deprive ourselves of the opportunity to provide our clients with the services required.

I support the 150 Hour Requirement. SB 691 will bring California standards into line with the national standards used by the vast majority of other states. California CPAs will face an insurmountable hurdle in representing their clients in other states if this standard is not adopted.

I received my BS (Accounting) at CA State University - Northridge, and my MBA (Finance) at San Francisco State University. I am currently awaiting scores on my final section of the CPA exam (AUD), and looking for employment with an accounting firm.

I too strongly encourage our California Legislature to pass a bill mandating the 150-hour requirement as the only pathway to licensure. As a graduate of California State University, Chico I easily earned well over 150 units, and I was 100% self-supported. If I can do it, anyone can. I agree with Guzel and strongly believe that 150-hour rule would not represent a substantial barrier to enter the profession. I too believe that given the current economic conditions, it really is very important that California CPAs are able to represent their clients throughout the nation and remain competitive by holding a substantially equivalent CPA license.

Bringing California’s CPA standards in line with the majority of states is a must in today’s business environment.  I applied for licensure under Pathway 2 and I strongly encourage our legislature to pass the SB 691 proposal so that 150 hours is a requirement for our future professionals.
