PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A Busy Month Ahead

By Ryan L. Nielsen, CPA

Keep an eye for all of the upcoming events in the coming months. We just had our second Young and Emerging Professionals social and this event is gaining some serious momentum. Thanks to all of you who participated. We are happy to see so many new faces and look forward to meeting more and more young professionals. If you know of any up-and-coming accountants who could benefit by socializing with others who are in similar places in their careers, let them know we plan to hold this social the last Friday of each month. We'll keep you posted on the exact dates, times and locations.

We are always looking to increase the number of local members. To this end, keep in mind that student members only pay $30 and candidate membership is free the first year. If you have folks within your organizations who are not members, please encourage them to sign up.

There is an eight-hour CPE event scheduled for Aug. 29 at the Sheraton featuring Frank Crawford, one of the best speakers on the circuit these days. Keep in mind that these events help fund our local scholarships, as well. If you are in need of some hours, please be sure to support this local event.

CalCPA and United Way are working together Saturday, Sept. 8 to benefit the Bakersfield Rescue Mission and the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter. It is a time for individuals and companies to make a difference in the community. Come join the fun. We have a kick-off breakfast planned at 7:30 a.m. at Stramler Park (3805 Chester Ave.) and will be dispersing to the worksites at 8:45 a.m. The registration deadline is Aug. 26, so sign up now!

Saturday, Sept. 29 is our Annual Murder Mystery dinner at TL Maxwell's downtown. Keep your eyes out for more information. Last year's event was the best networking event of the year, so put it on your calendars.

The chapter is proud to host its annual Student Night Oct. 17, which supports accounting students from California State University, Bakersfield and Bakersfield College. The purpose is to introduce students to local CPAs and expose them to the profession. Sign up to host students at your firm, business or organization. More information on the dinner will follow, but mark your calendars today. Social hour will be 5–6 p.m. and our dinner with featured speaker will begin at 6 p.m.

Have a great month. I look forward to seeing you all at the next event!
