PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Big Month for Chapter

By Adrienne Cantrell, CPA,
FRS Chapter President

September is a huge month for our chapter. Our education series continues with terrific classes presented by our Business & Industry Committee (Sept. 6, SBA Financing Programs) and APAS Committee (Sept. 11, Engagement, Management & Client Rep Letters and Cash & Tax Basis Financial Statements). Additionally, the full-day class on The Accountant’s Responsibility for Fraud will be held Sept. 12. Continue to watch for fliers on these and other upcoming CPE opportunities.

In keeping with education, we also embark on one of our biggest events of the year Sept. 18: Student Night. As last year proved so successful, we’ve busted out of the former location and moved the event to Tornino’s to allow for more space. We had nearly 300 people attend last year, with our mix of professionals and students nearly 50-50. Our committee did not want to stifle our attendance by maintaining limited venue space, so we’ve moved to a location that can handle the event’s growth. So, if you read between the lines, we are anxious to take your firms’ reservations for tables!

Our committee members will be calling your firms very soon to encourage you to attend and sponsor students. We’ve got a wonderful program planned, including Aaron Mitchell, a young and dynamic technical recruiter from Wm. Bolthouse Farms, who will speak on a variety of issues regarding professionalism. Our students should enjoy his presentation and benefit from his experience and energy. We also will be presenting our Promising Accountant Junior College Scholarships to four very deserving students.

This is much more than a recruiting event and I’d like to encourage everyone to support and attend this very important evening. Sure, many firms attend to get a look at the best and brightest who are getting ready to embark on their professional journey. But we all attend to support those emerging professionals, recognize them for choosing a wonderful profession and provide mentorship along the way. These students are the future of our profession in our community and they will greatly appreciate your sponsorship and the opportunity to meet and speak with you personally. You’ll find the experience both fun and rewarding as you meet them and see their enthusiasm for the profession and their futures.

In closing, I thank Anthony Forestiere for forming a Past Presidents’ Breakfast July 17. I was fortunate to attend and enjoyed the conversation and camaraderie that resulted. I believe the attendees were happy to be there and I look forward to tapping them as a resource for mentorship and assistance in the future.

Have a great month!
–Adrienne Cantrell, CPA

CHAPTER NEWS

Inaugural Past President’s Breakfast

Anthony Forestiere, FRS past president

As the immediate past president and a member of the Fresno Chapter Board of Directors for the past few years, it’s always been an annual discussion as to how the board could harness the knowledge and experience of the chapter’s past presidents. The discussion was always why the past presidents fade away once their term is up and how do we get them active again.

One idea was to invite them to write a guest article about themselves. The article could be about the personal life or strictly be about their professional life, kind of a “Where Are They Now?” article. Another idea was to bring the past presidents together and find out what might spur them to be involved.

With the recent initiatives at the state level for financial literacy and young and emerging professionals, our chapter thought it might be a great idea to set up a past president’s breakfast to generate a list of interested past presidents to be called upon for financial literacy projects and possibly talking with young/emerging professionals about the profession.

The chapter held such a past president’s breakfast in July to see what type of interest there was in possibly having an annual event and generating a list of interested past presidents. The breakfast was attended by 12 past presidents—and a few more mentioned they would like to participate, but were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.

The agenda consisted of a CalCPA update, financial literacy project, young and emerging professionals update and guest article interest. We spent about an hour telling the past presidents the recent happenings with CalCPA, the need for volunteers to help with financial literacy, the challenges facing the young and emerging professionals and what the past presidents could offer to that group, and finally the request for volunteers to submit guest articles to the Bulletin.

With the positive feedback we received from this meeting, we decided to make this an annual event. For those of you who couldn’t attend, look for future announcements about our next event. For those of you interested in learning more about our financial literacy and young and emerging professionals initiatives, contact chapter program associate Kay Coffin.
