PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Break out the Calendars

By Cindy Young, CPA

I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this article. I realize that tax season overwhelms many of you, but April 15 is only days away and CalCPA has some important upcoming events.
The chapter’s annual passing of the gavel will take place at our annual retreat June 6–8 when we’ll be heading to North Lake Tahoe for a few days of some well-deserved R&R. Rita Williams, our chapter program associate, has reserved a block of rooms at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to make your reservations. Our annual chapter retreat is always a fun weekend, and there are few more beautiful spots to visit than Lake Tahoe. Contact Rita to register for the retreat or download an event flier.
Besides the annual Friday get-together (hosted, as always, by Soares, Sandall, Bernachi & Petrovich), we’ve planned a brunch for Saturday morning to accompany the installation of officers. The rest of the day will be yours to enjoy with your family or friends. The special room rate of $219 is also available to our members on the nights of Thursday, June 5, and Sunday, June 8, if you’d like to spend an extra night or two. Just let Rita know.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 15, to attend our annual Awards Night at the Santa Barbara Club. You won’t want to miss this opportunity for a great dinner followed by an hour of CPE that promises to be just a little out of the ordinary. Irwin Jacobson, CPA and vice president of finance at Sony Pictures Entertainment, will discuss the benefits and opportunities in choosing to become a CPA. If the presentation he gave at the YEP Conference in 2007 is any indication, we’ll be treated to an enlightening talk.
Of course, we’ll also present scholarship awards to those accounting students whom we are in the process of selecting. This event, always a special one for our chapter, provides us the opportunity to show pride in our profession and our commitment to helping the next generation of CPAs.
Finally, I encourage all of you to join me and other CalCPA members in Sacramento for CPA Day at the Capitol Tuesday, May 13. This is our opportunity to promote the type of legislation that will benefit our clients and our profession. California legislators need to hear firsthand how certain laws impact their constituents, and those explanations aren’t always easily grasped by non-accountants. This is our chance, as practicing CPAs, to help our state senators and assembly members understand our point of view. This is your chance to help the political system in Sacramento work. CalCPA’s government relations department will schedule the appointments throughout the day. You won’t go into the capitol “cold,” either. We’ll spend an hour or so getting the talking points straight and clarifying our agenda.
As you’ve no doubt heard, the issue of mobility—the ability of CPAs to perform work for clients across state lines—will be addressed this year. Now is the time to make sure our representatives in Sacramento are well aware of how important this freedom to provide services in other states is to our clients and our profession.
Other matters that require clarification and explanation include our position on the possibility of assessing sales tax on the cost of services and the importance of achieving nationwide uniformity for CPA qualification.
—Cindy Young, CPA

CalCPA NEWS

CPA Day at the Capitol

Help legislators understand key issues facing California CPAs including the importance of CPA mobility and achieving substantial equivalency in our state. California is a part of a national effort to remove unnecessary barriers to providing services across state lines, which is unjustly costly to the clients of CPAs and may in fact interfere with consumer choice.
The connections you make will prove to be crucial in educating legislators and their staff before they vote on issues important to you as a California CPA.
You will establish meaningful relationships that ultimately will create a more favorable business environment for CPAs throughout California.

Date: Tuesday, May 13
Time: 9:30 a.m./registration; 10–11 a.m./issues briefing; 11 a.m.–3 p.m./appointments with legislators; 3:30–4 p.m./debrief
Location: Sheraton Grand Sacramento; Sacramento
RSVP: Online
