President’s Message

Lots of Reasons to Join CalCPA

By Cindy Young, CPA
A few months ago, a partner at a local CPA firm asked me why I thought it’d be worth his firm’s money to pay dues to CalCPA for all the professionals in his firm. He assured me that he would renew his own membership, but was curious to hear what I thought were the benefits to his firm of shelling out the bucks for each of the CPAs who worked for him.

I made a few suggestions, but I don’t think that either of us was convinced that I’d made a persuasive case for renewal. Since then, I have had more time to dwell on the question—plus I’ve recently returned from CalCPA’s Annual Members Business Meeting and Council meeting. Read on as I take another shot at answering his question.

It’s far from an “in your face” activity and something we might tend to take for granted, but each day in Sacramento, CalCPA’s government relations team advocates aggressively on our members’ behalf. When new legislation that could impact your work, your clients or your employer is introduced, you can count on our full-time team to make sure our profession’s interests are clearly and persuasively communicated to our legislators.

The enhancement of our image and promotion of our integrity as CPAs is another benefit of CalCPA membership. Public and media relations, print and radio advertising, as well as several well-established community outreach programs all combine to strengthen the public’s positive perception of our profession. Your participation makes these activities possible.

CalCPA members receive a plethora of essential information in the form of CalCPA Daily Clips, CalCPA BUZZ, your chapter newsletters and CalCPA Industry BUZZ, all via e-mail. The monthly magazine, California CPA, the annual Tax Bulletin and Technology & Business Resource Guide, as well as the peer review e-newsletter are all top-notch, informative publications provided by CalCPA.

Discussion forums, CalCPA listserves, podcasts, hotlines for questions about ethics, A&A, tax assistance and accounting education: all these services are available to CalCPA members. CPAs throughout California provide leadership and direction to their fellow members through their service on various CalCPA state committees. Through its affinity program, CalCPA has partnered with the likes of, among others, ADP, CC&H, QuickBooks, UPS and CPA Exam support through Kaplan, Becker and Roger Philipp. Some popular theme parks even offer members significant discounts.

In 2009 CalCPA will mark 100 years of service and support to our profession. Its mission: To increase the value and promote the integrity of the CPA profession; contribute to the success of our members; and strengthen client, employer, public and government trust in CalCPA member advice, work products and opinions.

CalCPA membership has hit more than 30,000—don’t be left out. Renew today if you have not done so. Encourage your colleagues and candidates to join. Membership entitles us to all these excellent services and promotes the continued success of our profession.
