PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lots of Way to Get Involved

By Cindy Young, CPA

“We must cultivate our garden.”–Voltaire Candide (1758)
One challenge we, as your board of directors, take seriously is our commitment to raise funds every year for the scholarships our chapter awards to accounting students enrolled in the colleges and universities within Channel Counties Chapter’s territory. Based on the number and quality of the applicants we see every year, a lot of bright, dedicated students in Ventura and southern Santa Barbara County want to become CPAs, but struggle to find the funds for tuition and books. You have two opportunities that are coming up soon to help build this year’s scholarship fund so our chapter will be able to award this much-needed financial assistance.
The first opportunity is Sept. 25 at the Fess Parker Double Tree Hotel in Santa Barbara, when author and instructor Thomas Noce, CPA, CFE, will present “Audit Standards Update: The New Audit Risk Assessment Standards.” This is an eight-hour A&A course covering SAS No. 104–111, the new audit risk assessment model intended to replace “checklist” auditing methodology with substantial changes designed to put the thought process back into auditing.
How will these new standards impact your current audit practice? Is this really the true paradigm shift it’s hyped up to be or the same horse in zebra pajamas? Tom will fill us all in, so be sure to sign up soon.
The California CPA Education Foundation has donated this course to our chapter, so, after we pay for the room rental and your breakfast and lunch, the rest of the proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund. Now, where can you get eight hours of CPE from an instructor as polished as Tom, plus all that food and one of the best views in Santa Barbara for $175? It’s a big room, but you’d better sign up now!
Your second opportunity to help line the coffers of our scholarship fund comes Oct. 22: our annual Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, to be held this year at the Montecito Country Club overlooking the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, Andree Clark Bird Refuge, East Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Rarely do non-members have an opportunity to play this private, challenging and historic course.
We held our first large-scale tournament at Montecito four years ago when Joe Lanza, CPA and past CalCPA president, raised the bar, increasing the number of golfers from around 30 at a public course in Ventura to more than 90. Despite a chilly November rain shower that year, everyone had a great time. With our scramble format duffers can have as much fun as single digit handicap golfers. And for an entry fee of $175 you’ll get a boxed lunch, a great dinner, a chance at some cool prizes and a truly memorable round of golf. Encourage your firm to participate as a sponsor.
We, as CPAs dedicated to our profession, cultivate our garden by encouraging students to pursue a career as a CPA. Take advantage of both of these opportunities to expand your own knowledge and enjoy an afternoon on the links while contributing to the CalCPA Channel Counties Scholarship Fund. You’ll be glad you did.
–Cindy Young, CPA
