PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Swing Time
Last chance to sign up! Don’t miss the Channel Counties Chapter Scholarship Golf Tournament at Montecito Country Club Monday, Oct. 22!
It’s October already! Autumn on the South Coast might not seem like a true season in and of itself, especially if you grew up in Ohio like I did, but I can feel the change. It’s subtle. The evenings are cooler and our days are getting a bit shorter. What could be more pleasant than spending a Monday away from the office, out on a beautiful golf course overlooking the blue Pacific? If you haven’t signed up to play in our tournament Monday, Oct. 22, now is the time! Look for the link to the tournament flier in this newsletter. Don’t be left out! We are going to have a wonderful time, plus the net profit increases our scholarship fund. Since it’s a scramble format, even if you haven’t dusted off those clubs in a year, you’re going to have fun. It’s my personal challenge to include the maximum number of players, so thanks in advance for your part in helping put two teams on every hold for our shotgun start.
Be sure to calendar Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Ventura Beach Marriott, where your chapter has arranged to provide you with three hours of continuing education featuring Luis Tejeda, IRS Fraud division group manager, who will discuss “Direct From the IRS: The Tax Gap and Latest Trends.” He will focus on primary areas of discrepancy on tax returns as well as industry trends of which CPAs preparing returns should be aware. Buffet breakfast is served at 8:30 a.m. followed by the presentation from 9 a.m.–noon.
Have you checked out the new and improved CalCPA website yet? It’s pretty nifty, easy to follow and full of useful information—whether you are in public practice or private industry. I suggest you take some time to see what you might be missing. Chances are you’ll find plenty of reasons to log onto the site regularly once you become familiar with the plethora of valuable resources you will find there.
Finally, as we move into fourth quarter 2007 and contemplate all the hoopla that comes with year-end planning, remember to make time for the stuff that keeps you happy and healthy. Friends, family, pets, exercise, some good music, beach sand between your toes … don’t let the pressures of your work cause you to lose perspective and fail to make time for those elements that truly add quality to your life.
—Cindy Young, CPA
