CPA Day at the Capitol

Help legislators understand key issues facing California CPAs including the importance of CPA mobility and achieving substantial equivalency in our state. California is a part of a national effort to remove unnecessary barriers to providing services across state lines, which is unjustly costly to the clients of CPAs and may in fact interfere with consumer choice.
The connections you make will prove to be crucial in educating legislators and their staff before they vote on issues important to you as a California CPA.
You will establish meaningful relationships that ultimately will create a more favorable business environment for CPAs throughout California.
Date: Tuesday, May 13
Time: 9:30 a.m./registration; 10–11 a.m./issues briefing; 11 a.m.–3 p.m./appointments with legislators; 3:30–4 p.m./debrief
Location: Sheraton Grand Sacramento; Sacramento
RSVP: Online

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Au Revoir

By S. Dana Senes, CPA

The time has come for my final President's Message and to pass the gavel to our incoming president, Rusty Roy. He and his leadership team will be meeting this month to plan your 2008-09 programs. I will continue on that team as past president and look forward to participating more in our local tax roundtables.
I would like to thank the chapter members who were able to give their time by stepping up and serving as leaders in this organization. My year as president was an invaluable experience, personally and professionally, and I encourage any member to consider becoming more involved in CalCPA. I also would like to thank our leadership team members’ firms for allowing these individuals to take the time to organize, plan and participate in our programs, and for supporting our board and committee chairs by encouraging other staff members to attend and network within our group at the local and state level. Personally, I wish to thank GBP&B for allowing me to record so much nonbillable time this year while I served as chapter president. I appreciate the support and guidance I have received from those who served before me and from those who continue to serve our chapter.
It was a great year for our chapter, mainly due to the efforts of Sherri Parkinson, our program associate extraordinaire. I will be forever in her debt for making sure things ran smoothly at every event. Did you know that we are the only chapter who has a CPA running our events? Thank you, Sherri, for being here for our chapter.
A big thanks to the following for serving on the 2007–08 board or as committee chairs and for making the time to represent our chapter.
Officers Debbie Wacker, past president (Debra AG Wacker CPA,); Rusty Roy, vice president (Roy & O’Connor CPAs); Tania Arnold, secretary (SLO Regional Transit Authority,); and Terri Harris, treasurer (Lapp, Fatch, Myers & Gallagher).
Directors Sue Cosper (Barbich Longcrier Hooper & King); Phil Hasel (Philip Hasel, CPA,); Kevin Jackson (CygNet Software, Inc.); Polly Mead (Polly Mead, CPA); Greg Peters (RRM Design,); and Karan Pohl (Coast National Bank).
Chapter committee chairs Al Eschenbach, Accounting Principles & Accounting Standards (GBP&B Tax and Business Advisors); Cindy Bayless, Estate Planning (Lapp, Fatch, Myers & Gallagher); Gere Sibbach, Governmental Accounting & Auditing (San Luis Obispo County); Rusty Roy, MAP (Roy & O’Connor, CPAs); Debbie Wacker, Taxation and SLO Tax Roundtable (Debra AG Wacker, CPA); Janice Carr, Accounting Education (Cal Poly); Jan Jensen, Personal Financial Planning (GBP&B Tax and Business Advisors); Philip Hasel, Financial Literacy (Philip Hasel, CPA); and Kathleen O’Connor, North County Roundtable Discussion (Roy & O’Connor, CPAs).
Thank you also to Peggy Hesse (Lapp, Fatch, Myers & Gallagher) for serving as CalCPA Board vice chair.
When you see one of these members at an upcoming event, please thank them for representing us. And thank you all from the bottom on my heart for making this year so enjoyable for me, and I hope you can all come to the coronation of Rusty Roy as our fearless leader.
It’s time to party and celebrate living and working on the Central Coast.
—S. Dana Senes, CPA

On behalf of the Central Coast Chapter’s officers, directors and members, we extend our warmest of welcomes to our new members: Brian Howard, Jarrod Penner, Brooke Bates... [see all new members]

Your Tax Questions Answered!

Debbie Wacker is asking for everyone’s help. At an upcoming Tax Committee meeting, each member must pose questions for both the IRS and FTB. A task force then goes through the questions and selects those that will be presented to the taxing agencies for the subsequent fall meetings. So, do you have a question you want asked? The question can be on any level: technical, legal, compliance or other.
Please contact Debbie by Thursday, May 8.

Ideas/Topics/Suggestions: Bring ’em On

Do you have a topic idea for next year? Did you attend a class where you loved the speaker? Would you like to see more social or scholarship events on our calendar? Are you wondering what it would be like to volunteer with fellow CPAs for a cause that is near and dear to your heart? Would you like to see more events focused on young and emerging professionals? Did you like any of the events we had last year and want to voice your support for continuing them? Do you have any ideas to increase attendance at meetings or increase membership in CalCPA?
Please send all ideas, topics or suggestions to incoming president Rusty Roy or chapter program associate Sherri Parkinson. The board will hold its planning meeting Tuesday, May 6, so send your feedback today!
