PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings Central Coast Chapter

By S. Dana Senes, CPA

It’s back to school time and this month I'd like to focus on the value of your CalCPA membership. While surfing the new CalCPA website I came across a message from Channel Counties Chapter President Cindy Young, which I felt answered many questions that our members might have.
Cindy's message was titled “Lots of Reasons to Join Cal CPA” and I asked her if I could share her message with our members:
“A few months ago, a partner at a local CPA firm asked me why I thought it’d be worth his firm’s money to pay dues to CalCPA for all the professionals in his firm. He assured me that he would renew his own membership, but was curious to hear what I thought were the benefits to his firm of shelling out the bucks for each of the CPAs who worked for him.
“I made a few suggestions, but I don’t think that either of us was convinced that I’d made a persuasive case for renewal. Since then, I have had more time to dwell on the question—plus I’ve recently returned from CalCPA’s Annual Members Business Meeting and Council meeting. Read on as I take another shot at answering his question.
“It’s far from an “in your face” activity and something we might tend to take for granted, but each day in Sacramento, CalCPA's government relations team advocates aggressively on our members’ behalf. When new legislation that could impact your work, your clients or your employer is introduced, you can count on our full-time team to make sure our profession’s interests are clearly and persuasively communicated to our legislators.
“The enhancement of our image and promotion of our integrity as CPAs is another benefit of CalCPA membership. Public and media relations print and radio advertising, as well as several well-established community outreach programs all combine to strengthen the public’s positive perception of our profession. Your participation makes these activities possible.
“CalCPA members receive a plethora of essential information in the form of CalCPA Daily Clips, CalCPA BUZZ, your chapter newsletters and CalCPA Industry BUZZ, all via e-mail. The monthly magazine, California CPA, the annual Tax Bulletin and Technology & Business Resource Guide, as well as the peer review e-newsletter are all top-notch, informative publications provided by CalCPA.
“Discussion forums, CalCPA list serves, pod casts, hotlines for questions about ethics, A&A, tax assistance and accounting education: all these services are available to CalCPA members. CPAs throughout California provide leadership and direction to their fellow members through their service on various CalCPA state committees. Through its affinity program, CalCPA has partnered with the likes of, among others, ADP, CC&H, QuickBooks, UPS and CPA Exam support through Kaplan, Becker and Roger Philipp. Some popular theme parks even offer members significant discounts.
“In 2009 CalCPA will mark 100 years of service and support to our profession. Its mission: To increase the value and promote the integrity of the CPA profession; contribute to the success of our members; and strengthen client, employer, public and government trust in CalCPA member advice, work products and opinions.
“CalCPA membership has hit more than 30,000—don’t be left out. Renew today if you have not done so. Encourage your colleagues and candidates to join. Membership entitles us to all these excellent services and promotes the continued success of our profession. "
   Well said, Cindy. Thank you.
On this same theme, chapter member Dan O'Hare participated in a government relations conference call in July and asked me to help get the word out to our chapter and stir up interest in next year’s CPA Day at the Capitol.
The annual event will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2008, and we need a strong contingent of chapter members to participate. Please let me know if you might be interested in a bus trip up to Sacramento if there are enough of us that want to participate.
I'm also hoping to hear more positive feedback on the programs and changes we are all making in our offices to improve the work/life balance here on the central coast. Keep those e-mails coming.
–S. Dana Senes, CPA

CHAPTER NEWS

Meet Our Board: Rusty Roy

Rusty Roy, CEO of Roy and O’Connor, CPAs in Paso Robles, is chapter vice president and chair of the chapter’s MAP Committee. Roy became involved with CalCPA as chair of the chapter’s MCS Committee in 1993, a position he held until 1995. Roy has been a member of the CalCPA MAP Committee since 1996 and served as chair of the CalCPA MAP Committee (2002–04).
Roy’s personal goals include attending the Leadership Institute, facilitating the integration of the CalCPA MAP and MCS committees and developing ideas and goals for next year. CalCPA has “improved my roles as firm managing shareholder, practitioner and contributor to my professional community as well as the community at large,” he says.
In Roy’s spare time he enjoys playing and singing Hawaiian music and Christian music at Mass at St. Rose Church in Paso Robles. He also enjoys sailing, surfing and riding motorcycles. Roy’s favorite movie is Captains Courageous and he enjoys reading anything by Ken Follett. His musical interests are Hawaiian, Christian, jazz and blues.
Roy has been married to Ann for 34 years and they have two children, a son at Santa Clara University and a daughter at Mission College Prep.
Prior to becoming a CPA, Roy was a rigger on a four-mast sailing ship, boat painter and a financial analyst for an SBA loan-packaging firm. If Roy could be anything other than a CPA, he would be a college professor.
You can reach him at rusty@royandoconnor.com.

2008 CPA Day at the Capitol

Team up with CalCPA members from all over the state Tuesday, May 13, 2008, and help legislators understand the issues facing California CPAs by participating in CPA Day at the Capitol in Sacramento. This is your opportunity to speak with your legislators and their staff on issues important to you as a California CPA.
You will be briefed on current issues and then assigned to teams to meet with the legislators. Together, we can help them understand the impact and unintended consequences that well-meaning laws and regulations can have, and we’ll establish meaningful relationships for the future.
