PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Networking on the Central Coast
Don’t miss your chance to mingle with attorneys, bankers and CPAs and tour the Presidential Suite in the new Cal Poly Mustang Sports Complex at our upcoming ABC mixer. Your chapter leadership team is busy planning this unique networking opportunity and invites you to join us Tuesday, Oct. 23 for ABC Night (Attorneys, Bankers and CPAs).
This mixer is destined to be a popular event for all of us Cal Poly alumni and supporters of our local university. Because we value the relationships we build and maintain with our local attorneys, bankers, investment managers and advisers, we wanted to find the perfect location for this mixer, and I think we have. Come and experience the power of networking with your local business leaders and blend networking into your career life. A special thank you to our planning committee, board members, Greg Peters, Debbie Wacker and our banker Karan Pohl for their efforts in putting this event together. Don't forget to let your favorite attorneys, bankers and other financial professionals know about the event. Look for specific details in this Bulletin.
I also hope to see some of you in Los Angeles Oct. 19 when CalCPA presents "Celebrating Women CPAs—Network, Learn and Grow" at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City. I plan on being there Friday and then being on my bike bright and early the next morning in Santa Barbara to participate in the "Start to Finish MS Bike Tour" fund-raising event with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Southern California. I'm riding with my husband's team from Conoco Phillips and am looking for pledges. Maybe next year we can have our own local team, too! It is such a worthy cause and so important to give back to this wonderful community where we work and live.
Looks like we also have another exciting panel of our membership speaking for Student Night 2007. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. Yes, it is the same day as Spidell, but this gives our north and south county members the opportunity to attend both events on the same day. This year's event promises to be just as interesting as last year’s. Thank you to board members Debbie Wacker and Polly Mead for arranging this event and getting the students and panel to join us in learning more about the many options available in our profession. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, please contact chapter program associate Sherri Parkinson
Don't forget our chapter also offers interest groups and geographically based discussion groups tailored to provide high-quality networking opportunities and free CPE. Look for topics and times in this Bulletin.
Our last scholarship event for this year will be Friday, Dec. 7 with a "Tax Update Seminar" featuring Gary McBride and Tom Daly. We have not seen these lecturers in our area for a while and are happy to welcome them back. I also heard that they won an award for their text for this course, and you can get a copy if you attend. Not only are you getting another annual and useful tax update, but you also are supporting your local colleges by allowing us to continue to award scholarships to those deserving students, potential CPAs and most importantly, potential employees.
Last, I would like to congratulate our own Rusty Roy who was selected to participate in the CalCPA Leadership Institute 2007–08 program. We are very proud of vice president Rusty and want to thank him for representing us here on the Central Coast.
Happy October.
—Dana Senes, CPA

You are the driving force behind one of the world’s largest economies. Isn’t it time you put your leadership skills to use for the betterment of the CPA profession?
The CalCPA Nominations Committee is accepting nominations until Dec. 1 for 2008–09 CalCPA officers and council members at large. Officer positions include chair, first vice chair, treasurer and two vice chairs. Three council members at-large also will be elected.
