President’s Message
Starting the Year Off Right
By Bob Johnston, CPA
Happy New Year! I hope the year 2007 will be all you want it to be.
The beginning of the year is also the beginning of the planning process for chapter’s upcoming fiscal year, which starts June 1.
Rob Anderson of BPM is the incoming chapter president and there will be a planning meeting at Scott’s in Walnut Creek Jan. 16. All officers, directors, committee chairs and other chapter members who would like to be involved in making the chapter even better, are encouraged to attend. Contact chapter coordinator Soco Davenport at soco.davenport@calcpa.org or Rob Anderson at randerson@bpmllp.com.
For many CalCPA members, whether in public practice or industry, the start of the year is extremely busy. For practitioners, January is a month of anticipation—waiting for it all to hit the fan a bit later. That means before things get too busy, there are a lot of really great chapter programs to attend in January. Among the events:

  • Jan. 10: At noon, the Contra Costa Discussion Group meeting hosts guest speaker Scott Haislet, who will discuss 1031 transactions. At the same time, the South Bay Discussion Group features Joe McKissack, who will address IRA distribution issues.
  • Jan. 17: The chapter meeting will focus on young people as we recognize scholarship winners.
  • Jan. 20: BARE presents a low–cost CPE program featuring Noelle Allen, who will talk about the “Top 10 Individual Tax Planning Issues for Your Client’s Financial Well Being.”
  • Jan 23: There will a half–day conference regarding tax issues in divorce.
  • Jan. 25: The Young and Emerging Professional Committee presents speakers Daniel Markovitz of TimeBack Management and Erma Smith, a psychology professor at Los Medanos College. Markovitz will discuss time management and Smith will speak on stress management. (So as not to get stressed out in advance of the speakers, this event will be held at the Pyramid Ale House in Walnut Creek).
  • Feb. 7: Well, it’s kind of getting busy for the public folks, but the Business and Industry Committee is having a breakfast meeting at Scott’s in Walnut Creek featuring a business insurance expert. By the way, I attended the committee’s December meeting and was very impressed with the presentation: “Sox Effect–Practical Considerations” by Roy Maynard of BPM and “Use of Spreadsheets and Considerations of Section 404 of Sarbanes Oxley.” Congratulations to chair Jenise Gaskin and her committee.
One last thing: Chapter board members are planning a post–April 15 event—which is not a NASCAR race. If you think you know what we have in mind, send me an e–mail at bobjohnston@astound.net and those who guess correctly will be in a drawing for two free passes to this celebration.
If you have read this far you must be quite interested in your professional organization. Good for you. You can make a difference in CalCPA and your profession.
Your professional organization needs you ... go for it.
    —Bob Johnston, CPA
