President’s Message
The Busy Season
By Bob Johnston, CPA
Are you really, really busy already? Are you concerned about getting everything done during this hectic season? Are you worried about getting stressed out? A busy season is a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because this is a time when people in our profession provide advice, counsel, assistance and peace of mind to our clients and thus to our communities. What would it be like if there weren’t people doing what we do? Well, all right, maybe there would be a flat tax.
A busy season is a curse because of the large workload, which too often results in being too busy. This is true for those who work in industries with employers having calendar year-ends, as well as those in public accounting. But, we are not alone. My dad was a farmer, and when I was young we only took one summer vacation. As he said, you have to make hay when the sun shines. Or take the retail business. What percentage of retail sales occurs between Thanksgiving and Christmas?
And really, busy season is only 13 weeks long.
And, you will get through it once again, and, undoubtedly you will feel great when your busy time is over.
The chapter wants you to have something to look forward to so that you can feel even better. We have arranged a very special outing Tuesday, April 24—a “Post–Busy Season Celebration.” It will be held at Blackhawk Museum, where you will be able to see a terrific collection of one-of-a-kind coachbuilt and limited production automobiles. There will be docent tours, food, drinks and merriment for all. So mark your calendars and plan to attend this extraordinary event.
And let me remind you that Thursday, Feb. 1 is a BARE event, sponsored by the San Francisco Chapter, where the new audit risk standards will be discussed. Also, both the Business and Industry and the QuickBooks committees will meet Wednesday, Feb. 7. So, stay tuned … things are continuing to happen in our chapter.
Happy busy season to all, and to all a good night.
—Bob Johnston, CPA
