PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Comings and Goings
Now that January has passed, we find ourselves in the midst of busy season. So here are some thoughts for the month for the few of you reading this column.
January was an extremely busy month for the chapter:
- The Bay Area Regional Education (BARE) event featured Arthur Werner, JD, who discussed “What to Do When Bad Things Happen to Good Clients.”
- The always-popular Tax Issues in Divorce Mini Conference was well-attended and, again as always, our speakers presented a wealth of information.
- We held our first Honorees Night in January (see photos). Joe Mori, former chair of San Jose State University’s accounting department, gave a very inspiring talk. We awarded a number of scholarships and recognized the students from our local universities for their accomplishments.
Our own Chris Yahng was presented with the Laverne Garcia Award to recognize his contributions to our profession and community. We also awarded the first East Bay CPA Executive of the Year award to Dan Heinrich, CFO of Clorox. This award is for a business leader who is a CPA, has achieved notable professional success and has given back to our community here in the East Bay.
- Our annual Partners Forum lunch featured Bruce Allen, CalCPA’s director of government relations, who spoke about potential legislation in California that could impact our profession. Also, CalCPA CEO Loretta Doon gave us her view on the future of the profession in California. Loretta and Bruce provided a valuable update on important issues, such as mobility and the 150-hour requirement, mandatory peer review and future agenda items.
The mobility issue involves proposed current legislation to make California a “substantially equivalent” state and allow those with a California CPA license to provide services in other states that conform to the mobility provisions of the Uniform Accountancy Act without needing an additional license. It has been compared to a driver’s license in that CPAs would be required to obey the laws of another state in which they practice, but they would not be required to obtain a new license in each state. This is a huge issue impacting virtually all members.
Please save the date of Tuesday, May 13 to attend CPA Day at the Capitol in Sacramento. In light of the potential legislation impacting our profession, I encourage everyone to take the time to attend this important event that is designed to inform and demonstrate how seriously we consider legislation that affects our industry and our careers. This is an annual event, but it has never been more important than this year.
Have a terrific busy season and don’t hesitate to contact me with your comments and suggestions. You can reach me at (925) 296-1007 or by e-mail.
—Rob Anderson, CPA
