PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
An Eventful Year
By Rob Anderson, CPA
In my first opportunity to write a column I would like to take a moment to thank Bob Johnston for his TERRIFIC leadership during his years of service to CalCPA, particularly last year as our president.
Over the last several years, Bob has had many ideas that have changed what CalCPA is to the members in the East Bay. The result is an organization that is more vibrant and relevant to the constituency. We have achieved a higher profile in the business community by adding events that extend beyond our own membership.
A brief summary of new and almost-new events:
• We had our first “ABC Night” in September and it was attended by more than 200 people. The evening was one-of-a-kind in the East Bay drawing together CPAs, attorneys, bankers, financial advisers, and other members of the business community. If you attended, you know what a success this first time event was. If you missed it, you have an opportunity to attend in September.
• We held a Student Outreach Luncheon where students from Cal State East Bay, St. Mary’s College and UC Berkeley were treated to lunch and had the opportunity to hear speakers from several local firms talk about their careers in public accounting; what they liked; and how they got there. This was well-received by all and will no doubt become a regular event.
• Ice skating and socializing were the focus of the second annual ice skating party put on by the Young Emerging Professionals. This was held in downtown Walnut Creek in December.
• The second annual luncheon for partners happened in January. Once again we had leaders from CPA firms in the East Bay gather to get to know one another and listen to a great program. Don Scholl, a consultant to the CPA profession for more than 40 years, spoke about the future of the profession and answered questions. CalCPA CEO Loretta Doon discussed issues that impact practicing CPAs in California now and on the horizon.
• And in April we all celebrated the end of busy season with the broader business community with a party at the Blackhawk Auto Museum [view photos].
In future months I will elaborate more on each of the events planned as they come up. For now, I would like to again thank Bob Johnston for his leadership that made last year’s events happen. Bob you are a TERRFIC leader, president and friend.
– Rob Anderson, CPA
