Off and Running
By Bob Johnston, CPA
Well, we are off and running. We celebrated the chapter’s outgoing officers, directors and committee members and the installation of this year’s board and officers May 24. At that event, we also participated in a murder mystery dinner, and the guilty party was ... Mr. Royal Paine, the ultimate fan who felt betrayed. None of the competing tables determined the guilty party. So much for our sleuthing skills. Maybe we need to expand the forensic accounting training in the East Bay.
Hats off to all the officers, directors, committee chairs and committee members for their efforts on behalf of CalCPA. You truly provide wonderful services that benefit all California CPAs, as well as the financial community and the community at large. You should feel proud of your contribution to the profession. A big thank you goes to Rob Healy, outgoing chapter president, who has been instrumental in building the PFP Committee to be one of our chapter’s strongest committees. He led the PFP Committee’s push to get our Financial Literacy Committee formed. Michelle Matlin is continuing as chair of Financial Literacy committee and she and others have been in the schools and conducting training sessions for our volunteer instructors. Have you always wanted to teach? Well, here is an opportunity to really make a difference in our community. For more information, contact Michelle Matlin at (925) 943-1122.
An exciting thing occurred at the installation dinner: 15 new members participated in the event. This is due, in large part, to Michele Day and her new role in helping to welcome new members to our chapter. The duties of our secretary have also expanded and Joelyn Carr-Fingerle will be working with chapter coordinator Soco Davenport, and all of the liaisons and committees, to develop a chapter resource guide that will provide information about each committee, their objectives, the chairs and members, a preliminary calendar, etc.
At the May board meeting, we appointed a task force, led by new director Virginia Smith (yes, of St. Mary’s College fame), to review the possibility of an outreach to East Bay college students. The task force has already made major strides and you will hear more about this in future issues of the Bulletin.
There will be a new member orientation just prior to the chapter dinner July 18. If you are a new member or simply want to know more about what is happening with CalCPA, stay tuned for upcoming details regarding the orientation. The July 18 dinner is Past President’s Night and our featured speaker will be CalCPA Chair Marc Parkinson.
Please remember that CalCPA is your professional organization. Everything CalCPA does is geared to help California CPAs and the businesses and public they serve. I’m sure that all of the officers, directors and committee members feel as I do––that it is a true honor to serve such a highly regarded profession.

Dear Answerline,
Are you guys kidding? Eight SASs at one time? Are you trying to put me out of business? What’s wrong with the way I’ve been doing audits all these years? When will this ever end?
Help, Help, Help
That’s a lot of questions for one letter. First, no, we’re not kidding. Second, although all eight standards, the Statements on Auditing Standards Nos. 104–111 (collectively referred to as the Risk Assessment Standards), have been issued together, they are all not effective until periods beginning on or after Dec. 15, 2006. That’s a year and a half down the road—more than enough time to read them, get some CE on them, study their impact on your audits and discuss any time and billing changes with clients.
With regard to your next two questions, I think these standards are designed to keep you in business, not the opposite. I don’t think it’s necessary to rehash all of the audit failures that have rocked our economy, eliminated a major CPA firm and resulted in many lawsuits against CPA firms. Gaining a greater understanding of your clients and the environment in which they operate might even make your work more enjoyable. As to your last question, I hope it never ends because, if that day should ever come, it would do away with the thought process that makes this profession what it is.
