President’s Message
Off and Running
By Rob Anderson, CPA
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! These are the words used to start the Indianapolis 500 each year and apropos for the East Bay Chapter. We began our new year this month and held a planning day for chapter leadership, had our chapter installation of officers “meeting” at the A’s game (the A’s lost to the Royals) and participated in CPA Day at the Capitol in Sacramento with other CPAs from throughout California.
CPA Day at the Capitol is an annual event for California CPAs, and this year attracted more than 150 participants, who met with legislators and their staff to discuss issues impacting CPAs in California. Two of the issues discussed were financial literacy and practice privilege. Looking out for the interests of CPAs in Sacramento is important work that often goes unnoticed. Special thanks to East Bay Chapter members Bob Johnston, Michele Day, Joelyn Carr-Fingerle, Annise Brokstein and Bob Jones for attending.
The July chapter meeting will be July 17 at Scott’s Restaurant in Jack London Square in Oakland and will include our Past Presidents Night. The evening is always a wonderful opportunity to network with other CPAs, meet chapter leaders of the past and learn of the history of our chapter. Our speaker for the evening will be CalCPA Chair Teresa Mason. The evening will be preceded by a chapter orientation where new members can learn of opportunities to get more involved in our chapter.
Be sure to hold two dates in September: Sept. 18 (second annual ABC Night) and Sept. 25 (annual golf event).
ABC Night (attorneys, bankers, CPAs and others in the business community) will be held at Scotts Restaurant in Walnut Creek. Last year was sold out and everyone had great time.
Our golf event will be held at Harding Park in San Francisco in conjunction with the San Francisco and Peninsula Silicon Valley chapters. This will be our third year participating in the event, the proceeds of which fund student scholarships. Based on the growth of this event in the past two years I expect it will be sold out. If you are a golfer you know how great an opportunity it is to play at Harding. If you are not a golfer, the event is one where each foursome continuously hits the best ball out of your foursome. So, you can have a lot of fun in one of the most beautiful parts of the city—even if you are not particularly proficient at golf.
Thanks for listening. Put the above dates on your calendar. And I look forward to seeing you all on July 17.
