President’s Message

Pressing Issues

By Rob Anderson, CPA
As chapter president I had the opportunity to attend CalCPA’s Council meeting in June. This meeting was tremendously insightful and a great opportunity to hear about the work being done around our state by CPA volunteers and CalCPA staff that supports and furthers our profession. There were two days of wide-ranging presentations and discussions on topics from the CalCPA strategic vision to financial literacy programs to the work being done to promote and monitor legislation.

One of topics discussed at length was mobility, that is, our ability as CPAs to practice across state lines. Earlier this year the California Board of Accountancy recommended support of the Model Accountancy Act developed by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. There is a possibility that we will have legislation in 2008 that will recognize the need for CPAs in public practice to have greater uniformity of rules as we practice in other states, lessening the administrative burden as we serve our clients.

The mobility issue is an example of the important work being done by CalCPA staff members and volunteers. As I discussed last month, a way to get involved in this area is by attending the annual CPA Day at the Capitol, held each May. In 2008, CPA Day at the Capitol will be on May 13. It is likely there will important legislation impacting CPAs proposed early in 2008, so this will be an important day. It’s not too early to get this on your calendar.

I want to take this opportunity to remind you to hold two dates in September: Sept. 18 and Sept. 25. Sept. 18 is our second annual ABC Night (attorneys, bankers, CPAs and others in the business community) at Scotts Restaurant in Walnut Creek. Last year was sold out and we are looking forward to another great event.

Sept. 25 is our third annual golf outing, with the CalCPA San Francisco Chapter, at Harding Park in San Francisco. The proceeds from the event fund scholarships. This event has grown in popularity and should be sold out, so get your reservations in early. Please remember this is a team golf event, so even if your skills are more like Tigger than Tiger, you will have a great time in one of the most beautiful parts of San Francisco.

Remember, we have a great profession to be proud of and CalCPA is a great way to get involved and further our profession. I was reminded of this the other day when I heard a company in Emeryville put up a suggestion board announcing a $100 reward for any idea that would save the company money. The first winner: an accountant who suggested cutting the award to $50.

Have a great month.
– Rob Anderson, CPA
