Tech, A&A, Tax and More

Join us for a full day of CPE that will feature updates on tax issues, tech developments and more. Check out the highlights:
The morning will open with an Alice in Wonderland themed technology update: “Down the Rabbit Hole—A Brief Intro to the Changes Coming in Windows Vista and Office 2007” by Jim Sanders, co-chair of the CalCPA East Bay Chapter Technology Committee and a member of CalCPA’s Technology Committee.
Like it or not, here come the latest versions of Microsoft Windows and its companion Office Suite—Windows Vista and MS Office 2007—and they are destined to make fundamental changes in the way you do business.
You may briefly avoid these newcomers, but come 2008 they will be the only game for most office computers. Are you ready? Do you want to be ready? Is it possible to be ready?
Following this presentation will be “A&A Update 2007: Surprises Coming Your Way” featuring guest speaker John Levy, chair of the CalCPA East Bay Chapter’s AP&AS Committee and a member of CalCPA’s AP&AS Committee.
This presentation will highlight the existence, general purpose and scope of both current changes and those of the past decade, as well as review the current and pending definitions of GAAP and some related problems—with special focus on issues relevant to small, non-public businesses.
Concluding the day will be CalCPA East Bay Chapter Secretary G. Scott Haislet, CPA and attorney, who will discuss 1031 exchanges and entity structures, emphasizing issues with limited liability corporations.
Learn the broad spectrum of Sec. 1031 exchange fundamentals and issues, such as reporting a common 1031 exchange, nuances involved in deciphering real estate closing statements and actually completing the IRS Form 8824.
Haislet’s discussion of LLCs will review entity selection fundamentals and the information could help the adviser increase fee revenue (e.g., additional tax compliance engagements), avoid practitioner liability and add value to client relationships.
Haislet is president of Lafayette Exchange Corporation and operates 1031 Connection, Inc, a qualified intermediary for all types of 1031 exchanges.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lots of Way to Get Involved

By Rob Anderson, CPA

Our July dinner meeting at Scott’s Restaurant at Jack London Square was informative and fun. I hope you were able to attend! There were many chapter past presidents, as well as a great turnout of new members. Our speaker was CalCPA Chair Teresa Mason, who spoke about leadership in the profession and issues that will be addressed in the coming year.
She discussed the mobility issue, that is, our ability as CPAs to practice across state lines without significant administrative burdens, and addressed CalCPA’s strategic vision, financial literacy programs and efforts of staff and member volunteers to monitor legislation. There is also a new emphasis on developing services aimed at the many CalCPA members who work in industry.
Finally, check out the new and improved CalCPA website, which offers a wealth of chapter and CalCPA information, as well as news that can help you in your profession.
I am very excited that we will have our chapter dinner meeting Dec. 4, which will feature Gary McBride of California State University East Bay addressing current tax topics. The dinner will be held at the Lafayette Park Hotel. Many of you know Gary from the tax update and planning courses he has taught for the California CPA Education Foundation over the years. Sign up early.
Don’t forget the Second Annual ABC Night (Attorneys, Bankers, CPAs and others in the business community) Sept 18 at Scotts Restaurant in Walnut Creek. Last year was sold out and we expect the same this year.
Also, save Sept. 25 for our third annual golf outing at Harding Park in San Francisco, held in conjunction with the CalCPA San Francisco Chapter. The proceeds from the event fund scholarships. This event has grown in popularity and should be sold out, so make your reservations early. Don’t miss the opportunity to play on the same beautiful championship golf course as legends Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Scott Haislet (I didn’t say golf legends).
We have a great profession, so get involved. Take a minute to view the new website and find your way to the East Bay Chapter. Find a committee that interests you and attend a meeting. Or sign up for a chapter event. Or do both!
Have a terrific month, and I look forward to seeing you at the golf tournament, ABC Night and our other events.
–Rob Anderson, CPA
