Getting to Know You ...
A Look Back ... and Ahead
By Bob Johnston, CPA
Something special happened in the East Bay Nov. 7: the 11th Annual Advanced Estate Planning Symposium. It was a very good event with terrific speakers. But what I thought was really special was when our corporate sponsors of that event, The Mechanics Bank, East Bay Community Foundation and John Muir Health Foundation, donated $1,500 to the CalCPA East Bay Scholarship Fund in the name of Anna Maria Galdieri in recognition of the 11 years that she has chaired this educational program to benefit our local estate planning community.
Over the 11 years the Estate Planning Symposium has been held, substantial amounts have been raised for the scholarship fund in the name of Lillian Weil, a former CalCPA leader and a dear friend and mentor to Anna Maria. So, my congratulations to Anna Maria for being recognized by our corporate sponsors and thanks for all that you do for CalCPA and our estate planning community.
Our annual tax night will be held Thursday, Dec. 12. Attorney Robert Wood, of Wood & Porter, will discuss the Murphy case. Also, at 5 p.m., just preceding Tax Night, we will host our second new–member orientation, which is being chaired by Michele Day of KPMG. Chris Yahng, past CalCPA chair and chapter past president, will speak at the orientation.
Yes, it is December and planning for the 2007-08 fiscal year is already under way. Rob Anderson, of Burr, Pilger and Mayer, has scheduled a board of directors and committee chair planning meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Scott’s in Walnut Creek. If you are interested in becoming a board member or officer, contact Hank Levy, chair of the Nominating Committee, at hank@hanklevycpa.com. If you are interested in being active on a committee, contact Rob Anderson at randerson@bpmllp.com.
Our Scholarship Night will be held Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Scott’s in Oakland. John G. McWilliams, educator at San Francisco State University and past president of the San Francisco Chapter, will be our featured speaker. You may well hear more about “feeding the pig.” During this year the scholarship committee intends to award $22,800 in scholarships.
One last thing–your East Bay board is planning a post-April 15 surprise: an after-busy-season outing, and it is not a NASCAR event. If you think you know what we have in mind, e-mail me at bobjohnston@astound.net, and the those who guess correctly will be in a drawing for two free passes to the surprise event.
And don’t forget, there are a lot of events going on in the East Bay Chapter on a regular basis. We have three discussion groups: Young Emerging Professionals Committee (which holds an ice skating party Thursday, Dec. 14); QuickBooks Users Group meetings; PFP meetings; and financial literacy training. I hope you will take advantage of the training and personal growth that you will gain by attending and being involved in these committees.
CalCPA is your professional organization. And, right here in the East Bay, you can become involved to make your chapter, your professional organization and indeed your profession, better.
Happy Holidays.
