PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy New Year!

By Adrienne Cantrell, CPA

As part of our January Community Awareness Event, we will also hold our annual election of the chapter’s officers and directors. However, we are still looking to fill a couple of seats for committee work. The board, including our officers, devotes a good deal of time to the chapter by attending meetings and events and coordinating activities with our many committees. Many of our board members and officers also serve as chapter committee chairs.
In November’s Bulletin, I asked for interested volunteers to contact me, Kay Coffin or Anthony Forestiere about serving on or chairing a committee. Many hands make for easier work! We have a very dedicated core of volunteers, with our ranks growing each year. Our new Young & Emerging Professionals Committee is taking off and has attracted several members. I am looking forward to new and exciting things from the YEPs.
With our growth, though, we have a couple of vacancies to fill. First is our AP&AS Committee. Sheryl Yardumian has been chair for several years, and has done a wonderful job gathering great resources to provide A&A training to new and experienced CPAs. With the demands of a busy practice and being chapter secretary, Sheryl would like to find a replacement as committee chair. She is happy to mentor the volunteer (or volunteers as co-chairs) and provide needed support, especially during the first year.
Second, we have not had an active MAP Committee for the last year. The committee had been very active for many years, but a few of the members have all taken multiple turns as committee chair. Doyle Daniel, who serves on the CalCPA MAP/MCS Committee, was very gracious when he visited our board meeting in October and offered his mentorship to the volunteer (or volunteers) who would like to lead this important committee.
Our board and existing committee members and chairs are all willing to assist new volunteers in becoming familiar with the workings of our chapter and orient them to possible duties of chairing committees. We have a very large network of experienced chapter volunteers from which to draw for assistance. Please give serious consideration to providing your time and leadership to our chapter, helping it to grow stronger to continue to provide meaningful benefits to our members.
There are a few events in January to mention. The Technology Committee is presenting “What’s New for 2008” Jan. 22; the Litigation Committee is presenting “Mechanics of Tracing” Jan. 31; and our Community Awareness event is being held Jan. 24, which will feature guest speaker Ashley Swearengin from Fresno State’s Office of Community and Economic Development. We will also honor our past presidents and new members at this event. Remember, if you are a past president or a new member from 2007, this event is free for you! Be sure to take this opportunity to mix with your colleagues before the busy season is upon us.
Thanks to all of you for your continued chapter support. Our ability to fund scholarships for deserving students is continually enhanced by your participation and dedication to our profession.
—Adrienne Cantrell, CPA
