CPA Day at the Capitol
Help legislators understand key issues facing California CPAs including the importance of CPA mobility and achieving substantial equivalency in our state. California is a part of a national effort to remove unnecessary barriers to providing services across state lines, which is unjustly costly to the clients of CPAs and may in fact interfere with consumer choice. The connections you make will prove to be crucial in educating legislators and their staff before they vote on issues important to you as a California CPA.
You will establish meaningful relationships that ultimately will create a more favorable business environment for CPAs throughout California.
Date: Tuesday, May 13

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Thanks for a Great Year
This year has just flown by, and this is my final president’s message. I have enjoyed this opportunity so much! It has been a fun and rewarding journey, and a financially successful year for our scholarship fund. I couldn’t have asked for more.
Our chapter’s success is due, in large part, to the amazing individuals who dedicate their time to our board and committees. We all contribute different skills and talents, but we share a common love for the profession and CalCPA. The friendships made are such a terrific byproduct of serving on this board, that I highly recommend the experience! Thank you, each and every one.
Although our board works hard to provide interesting programs to our members, it is that membership’s participation that really makes our chapter such a success. With our CPE offerings and events like the golf tournament, Student Night and Community Awareness Night, we are able to keep our members active, stimulated and entertained while raising funds for our scholarships. What a terrific organization! You can receive benefits from membership, collaborate and socialize with others, and give back to the future of the profession and our community—all at the same time! Thank you, members.
Finally, I would like to thank program associate Kay Coffin for her inexhaustible passion for our chapter. I don’t think our members really know how much Kay does for us—and our profession. She is a tremendous asset and has a unique dedication that just doesn’t come along every day. Thank you, Kay, from the bottom of my heart, for all the help you have been to me and to the board and membership.
I wish Denise Patterson the best success in her year as president, as well as our other officers, board members and committee members. I’m happy I get to remain on the board one more year as past president, as I enjoy working with you all. I know we’ll have another great year!
In closing, let’s review upcoming events. Most notably is CPA Day at the Capitol, scheduled for Tuesday, May 13. Kay has e-mailed event fliers, so register today! Our presence in Sacramento to promote legislation that is vital to our profession is of the utmost importance, especially this year. As we move along a path to gaining substantial equivalency in licensing requirements and achieving CPA license mobility, there are various steps occurring now and in the near future that impact that process. Please join us and represent our profession to our legislators. Our chapter also will have a bus to transport us to Sacramento. I look forward to seeing many of you there!
Also in May, the second annual Young & Emerging Professionals Conference is being held in Los Angeles and Sacramento. Last year’s event was very successful and well-received by our YEPs. This year features keynote speaker Christopher Gardner, the inspiration for the film "The Pursuit of Happyness," and numerous sessions targeted at developing and encouraging our YEPs as they move through the first several years of their professional experience.
I encourage firm partners and managers to send the YEPs from their firm to participate. They will get a lot out of the experience and be even better equipped to help move your firms forward in the future.
Thanks again for a wonderful year!
—Adrienne Cantrell, CPA

CalCPA NEWS
Don't Miss This Year's California Summit on Financial Literacy
CalCPA and the California Jump$tart Coalition are hosting the second California Summit on Financial Literacy at the Sacramento Convention Center Wednesday, April 23. And given the current credit crisis facing the state and the nation, the timing could not be better.
Participants will connect with a variety of programs, organizations and dedicated individuals working to improve the level of personal financial education of all Californians.
As the most trusted adviser, CPAs have a responsibility to address this important issue, and the Summit will offer ideas for everyone concerned.
More program information can found at the California Summit on Financial Literacy homepage, along with registration information and a video from the highly successful 2006 Summit.
Rising CPAs, Networking
CalCPA’s 2008 Young and Emerging Professionals Conference will provide an overview of what’s on the horizon for young CPAs, tips on becoming the “most trusted adviser” and feature keynote speaker Christopher Gardner, who will discuss his strategy for defining, finding and attaining success and focus.
Other topics will include networking, creating a business image and learning the ins and outs of communications. And new this year will be a look at the do’s and don’ts of CPA fashion.
The conference will take place May 7 in Los Angeles and May 9 in San Francisco.
Register online.
