PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Growth and Opportunities

By Denise Patterson, CPA

I am honored to be serving as 2008-09 Fresno Chapter president. It has been my pleasure to be a board member for the past several years and I look forward to working with you during the next year. I would also like to thank Adrienne Cantrell for leading the chapter this past year. Adrienne has been instrumental in the chapter’s success over the past several years. Under her guidance, the annual Student Awareness event has seen tremendous growth. Additionally, Adrienne has been the guiding force for the development of the chapter’s Community College Scholarship program. Thank you, Adrienne!
Over the past several years, the chapter has been increasing its membership. We stand at more than 950 members and are looking forward to increasing to 1,000, which will allow the chapter an additional representative on CalCPA Council. Please encourage your professional staff to join CalCPA.
This is an exciting year for the chapter. Incoming officers, directors and committee chairs held their annual planning meeting May 19 and a number of events have been scheduled for the upcoming year. I hope you will participate in as many as possible. Upcoming events include:

  • Saturday, Sept. 6: Community Day of Caring
  • Tuesday, Sept. 16: Student Awareness Dinner
  • Monday, Oct. 27: Annual Fresno Chapter Golf Tournament
  • Wednesday, Nov. 12: YEP (Young/Emerging Professionals) Recognition Event

The YEP Recognition Event is new to our events calendar. A number of our professionals traveled to San Francisco last year for CalCPA’s first YEP Conference to learn more about the profession and the available career opportunities. With the leadership of Adrienne Cantrell and Elaine Reule, a chapter committee was organized to provide opportunities for young and emerging professionals to be recognized and to provide networking opportunities specifically for this group. The committee has been working to develop a program to recognize the professional and community contributions of our young, emerging colleagues. Over the next several months, you will be reading more about this program and will be asked to nominate young, emerging professionals from your firm for recognition.
In addition to the above scheduled dates, the chapter will also be hosting a California CPA Education Foundation class in the fall. The net proceeds generated from this class, as well as from many of the other events scheduled for the year, are contributed to the chapter’s Scholarship Fund. Each year the chapter contributes to the scholarship funds at California State University, Fresno and Fresno Pacific University. Additionally, the chapter awards scholarships directly to students attending area community colleges.
In June, CalCPA will hold its annual business meeting and council meeting at Waikoloa Village in Hawaii. In addition to the meetings, the Education Foundation will be hosting its continuing education week June 23-26. at the Waikoloa resort.
I look forward to the coming year.
—Denise Patterson, CPA

2008 PCPS/TSCPA National MAP Survey: New and Improved

Find out how your firm stacks up against others by taking part in the PCPS/TSCPA National MAP Survey, which covers key practice management issues, from billing rates to salaries to services as a percentage of fees.
Survey results will allow you to compare your firm’s management policies and financial results to other firms; gain strategic guidance to build a more profitable and rewarding practice; and help make core business decisions.
Changes to this year’s survey include 40 percent fewer questions; targeted and “user-friendly” results; free summary results report for all participants; and results produced months earlier than in previous years.
The summary report will contain an extract of key performance metrics from the survey, such as hours charged/compensated, major income statement statistics and more. The comprehensive report, available for purchase and free to PCPS members, will include every performance metric gathered by the survey crossed against many relevant comparison groups, as well as additional ratios and analyses of statistics.
The survey is open through July 11.
