PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Passing the Gavel ... Not Just Yet!

By Renee H. Miller, CPA

February is upon us. How quickly the time goes by. In fact, it seems as if my term as chapter president just started yesterday. But come May, the new leadership will be installed and I will be passing the gavel to the new president.
The list of nominees for 2008-09 chapter leadership positions has been finalized and it is an impressive lineup of dedicated and talented CPAs: Mark Erickson for president; Evan Strano for first vice president, Johanna Sweaney Salt for second vice president, Andy Anderson for secretary and Lynette Atchley for treasurer. For director positions, we have Barbara Bowlby, Patrick Cabildo, Ted Collins, Kathy Johnson and Tracy Wirtes.
Over the past year, I have gotten to know these people better through board meetings and other CalCPA events. If elected, they will be an outstanding team, with Mark Erickson at the helm, to provide the necessary leadership to grow and develop our chapter.
Going beyond this list, we also have 15 chapter committee chair appointments. These people put in a lot of time and energy in areas such as planning CPE programs and finding good speakers for our monthly chapter meetings. It takes many dedicated members, working together, to build a strong chapter. So if any of you are interested in future leadership opportunities, please contact me, chapter program associate Monica Thompson or any of the other chapter leaders.
Among the 14 CalCPA chapters, we are No. 9 in terms of members. At 1,076 members strong as of Jan. 1, 2008, we almost rival the Peninsula Silicon Valley Chapter. So considering our size, we are proud that we are well represented at the state level. Richard Savich is on the California CPA Education Foundation Board of Trustees and Scott Hofferber, past president of our chapter, is one of four vice chairs and sits on the CalCPA Board. Richard Teaman, Johanna Sweaney Salt and Scott Hofferber are state committee chairs, and they, along with the chapter president and first vice president, are members of the CalCPA Council. As such, we attend council meetings three times per year. I have reported about some of these meetings in my previous messages, which included the Seattle meetings in June and Oakland meetings in November.
As I write this, there was an upcoming council meeting Jan. 25-26 in Newport Beach. On the agenda was the launch of the Financial Leadership Forum, which you can read more about in the January/February 2008 issue of California CPA. Briefly, the Forum will meet the needs of CalCPA’s business and industry members. For example, the Forum will provide executive education through the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business Center for Financial Reporting and Management. The initial offerings will include valuation for mergers and acquisitions and activity-based cost and management. There will also be a dedicated website that will provide news and resources relevant to business and industry CPAs.
Also at the January council meeting will be an update on the mobility issue and the work being done by CalCPA’s government relations team; a vote to approve the 2008-09 CalCPA budget, which was passed by the board in December; and we will be setting priorities for the strategic initiatives approved by the board.
For those of you headed for a busy season over the next few months, I wish you well in your business endeavors and look forward to seeing you at future CalCPA meetings and events!
   Respectfully,
—Renee H. Miller, CPA
