Eligibility

CPA

Any person holding a certificate from the state of California as a Certified Public Accountant and anyperson who is a resident of California and who holds a certificate or similar document as a Certified Public Accountant of another state or subdivision of the United States is eligible for CalCPA membership.

Student

Any person who is a full-time or part-time undergraduate student and has never been licensed as a CPA may apply for CalCPA Student membership.  Graduate students pursuing CPA licensure may apply for CalCPA Candidate membership.

Candidate

Any person who has a bachelor’s degree and is pursuing one of the California Board of Accountancy pathways to licensure and has never been licensed as a CPA may apply for CalCPA Candidate membership. 

Associate

You qualify for CalCPA Associate membership if you meet one of the following criteria and have two CalCPA licensed member sponsors:

  • Non-CPA owner of a CPA firm;
  • Billable professional employed in a CPA firm;
  • Educator teaching accounting or accounting-related courses at a college or university;
  • Foreign Licensee;
  • Public Accountant (PA);
  • Anyone in industry, government or education, holding a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and working under the direct supervision of a CPA;
  • Non-CPA serving on a CalCPA state or chapter committee; or
  • Non-CPA professional working in financial, legal or banking services.

Public Practice Executive—CPAs who are managing partners, partners, owners, principles orsole practitioners, consultant/owners or attorneys.

Professional Practice Professional Staff (Licensed > 5 years)—CPAs in public practice licensed more than five years not described in Executive membership type.

Professional Practice Professional Staff (Licensed < 5 years)—CPAs in public practice licensed less than five years not described in Executive membership type.

CPA—Salaried Employees Not Providing Billable Professional Services
The following categories include all licensed CPAs who are not currently providing billable professional services as described above.


Business and Industry Executive—CPAs in business and industry who are presidents, vice presidents, directors, consultants, controllers, CEOs, COOS or CFOs

Business and Industry Professional Staff (Licensed > 5 years)CPAs in business and industry licensed more than five years not described in Executive membership type.

Associate—Not a licensed CPA, does not qualify as a Student or Candidate and meets Associate eligibility requirements.

Candidate * —Any person who has a bachelor’s degree and is pursuing one of the California Board of Accountancy pathways to licensure and has never been licensed as a CPA, has never been licensed and is pursuing pathway to licensure via the California Board of Accountancy.

StudentAny person who is a full-time or part-time undergraduate student and hasnever been licensed as a CPA may apply for CalCPA Student membership. Note: Graduate students pursuing CPA licensure fall under the  Candidatemembership category.
