PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Future Looks Bright

By Wendy Richards, CPA

Dear members and friends:
I hope this finds you looking forward to a productive and prosperous 2008. We closed 2007 with a fun mixer at the famous Sutra Lounge in Costa Mesa and the leadership dinner at the Aquarium of The Pacific in Long Beach. Both events gave us a chance to celebrate the year with old friends and expand our network by meeting new people. Thanks to everyone who made these events so successful.
This will be another exciting year for the accounting and finance programs at our local colleges and universities. They represent a great resource for chapter members to further their education, get involved with undergraduate students and take advantage of the many professional programs they offer.
The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine recently established the Center for Investment and Wealth Management, which will study of wealth management. The mission is to become a national source of innovative approaches and educational programs on the issues surrounding the creation, management and intergenerational transfer of wealth. The center will produce research and programming that adds to the fundamental base of knowledge in wealth management and provides relevant source material for the professional community.
The Southern California region is the home of many financial institutions, investment companies, law firms, accounting firms and wealth management companies that provide services in the broad area of wealth management. The center’s strategies and activities will draw upon this breadth of expertise in the business community.
The College of Business and Economics at California State University, Fullerton received $30 million from Steven Mihaylo, the retired founder of Inter-Tel, a manufacturer of voice and data network equipment. Accordingly, the college will be renamed Steven G. Mihaylo Hall.
When it opens in fall 2008, the new home for the College of Business and Economics with feature a 250-seat lecture hall; more than 30 modern classrooms; faculty and administrative offices; interactive technology labs; and 10,000 square feet of collaborative working space for students. The university’s undergraduate accounting program has more than 1,000 accounting majors registered for the 2007-08 year. The College of Business and Economics also includes the Center for Corporate Reporting & Governance, the only such program in Orange County.
And Orange Coast College recently added a unique course to its accounting curriculum: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, a service learning course that involves students actually preparing federal and state income tax returns for qualifying community residents.
Best wishes for the coming year and be sure to keep checking the website and your e-mail for more fun and informative chapter events.
—Wendy Richards, CPA, CITP
