PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Exciting New Goals

By Wendy Richards, CPA

As we look forward with great anticipation to this next year, I thought it would be appropriate to start by reviewing some of the chapter’s goals for the next 12 months:
1. Hire a professional writer to help president write monthly column.

2. Provide a greater emphasis on the social aspect of our chapter. We’re going to offer more opportunities for members to network with peers, share ideas and meet new folks. Informal mixers and other social events can also provide young professionals a chance to connect with veteran CPAs who can serve as personal and professional mentors for the next generation of leaders.

3. Develop and host a new chapter leadership training event. (More on this topic next month)

4. Celebrating Women CPAs: Assist with this new CalCPA symposium coming in October to address the personal and professional issues facing women.
Working together, I know we’ll reach our objectives and have a great year!

As we look ahead, I would be remiss not to extend a big thank you to several key members for their contributions this past year. First, to Ed Jordan, our past president. His time and effort to lead the chapter, his work to increase membership and his vision to create the upcoming CFO of the Year event all give testimony to a job done extremely well. He’s left some big shoes (kettles?) to fill.

Second, thank you to all the officers, directors, interest group chairs and functional chairs for their hard work. Your leadership and dedication is what enables our organization to function well and be successful.

Finally, thanks to Maria Nazario, our chapter liaison, and Nancy Wilson, our chapter’s program associate, for their expert assistance on all chapter activities and events.

Mr. Wright Goes to Sacramento

By Leonard C. Wright CPA/PFS
Every year, our trip to Sacramento for CPA Day at the Capitol gets more enjoyable. We had the treat this year of a personal audience with Assemblywoman and Majority Whip Fiona Ma, CPA, who we all now recognize from her appearance on the cover of California CPA. She is exciting to listen to and makes powerful position statements for bills that are important for Californians. She is charismatic and exciting to watch.

One of the highlights I have had on my sojourns to Sacramento occurred as I strolled by the governor’s office on the way to one of my meetings. I was mobbed by children wanting my autograph. A little blond haired boy about age 7 cut me off and thrust his autograph pad in front of me. Other children followed suit not wanting to be left out. After I signed the autographs, they asked me what my name was and who I was. I said I am a CPA. The little girl to my left indicated that her dad is an accountant too. I told her that her dad does very important work!

This year’s exhibit at the Capitol featured four of California’s flags of the Civil War. Soldiers of California carried the flags into battle against the Confederacy’s intrusion in Arizona and New Mexico, and once on the East Coast. The point is that there is so much to experience beyond the important issues that we bring to legislators. It is a good investment of time to benefit our profession and enrich ourselves at the same time.

Now with the introductory legislative effects of Enron on the profession waning, we can now begin to focus on issues that benefit society and the profession. We focused originally on three pieces of legislation— a financial literacy bill, acceleration of mandatory peer review implementation and mobility—with Fiona indicating that we left one important piece out that she was introducing: a bill that would reduce corporate taxation. From Orange County, we had many that took the initiative to participate in our May 29 rewarding trip to Sacramento: David George, Monica Rebella, Hal Schultz and Michelle Walters. My apologies to anyone I may have missed.

Next year, when the invitation to participate in our annual legislative day is extended, mark your calendars and be prepared to have both and enjoyable time representing the profession, personal enrichment, and rubbing elbows with new and old friends.
