PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Chapter Happenings

By Wendy Richards, CPA

Greetings members:
My sympathy goes out to everyone affected by the recent fires, and I send a heartfelt thanks to the firefighters and others helping to limit the damage and serving those in need.
CalCPA will activate our disaster volunteer network to coordinate resources for the various assistance centers and answer questions about tax issues and other implications of disaster related losses. Visit CalCPA’s online disaster related resources.
Congratulations to Carolina Camacho who received her internal auditor certification during a luncheon held at the Turnip Rose restaurant in Anaheim Oct. 16. Carolina’s certificate represents the successful completion of hard work, job experience and examinations. Well done, Carolina!
Also, Jeff Lenning recently welcomed his new baby girl, Ella, into the world. Congratulations to his family.
The inaugural Celebrating Women CPAs Conference was held Oct. 19. This sold-out event attracted more than 300 women from around the state and featured keynote speakers, informative break-out sessions, resourceful sponsors and a delicious luncheon. Thank you to the planning committee and everyone who made this event such a tremendous success.
The CalCPA Leadership Institute held a two-day seminar Oct. 18–19 featuring Bill Reed, a noted leadership expert. Bill’s focus was on understanding our personal leadership styles and how to be more effective in the workplace. Enrollment in the Leadership Institute is available to any CalCPA member and requires formal application and selection. I recommend the training to those committed to improving their leadership skills and professional effectiveness. Applications for the 2008 program will be available early next year.
The next chapter mixer will be Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Sutra Lounge at Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. Please join us to mingle with old friends and meet new ones at this legendary Orange County gathering place. Take a moment right now to check your schedule and register for this great event.
Wishing you continued success and working hard to make sure the OC/LB Chapter is a valuable resource for your career.
—Wendy Richards, CPA, CITP

Retirement and Aging Symposium IV

By Michael Bader, Esq., CPA and Jim Kirby, CPA/PFS, CFP, CFS

The chapter’s ElderCare Group and Personal Financial Planning Group are again hosting this symposium, now in its fourth year, on topics focused on helping practitioners of all disciplines better serve their aging clients. Our past symposiums offered networking opportunities for financial planners, attorneys, caregivers, CPAs, care managers and financial services representatives.
Our first session, Tuesday, Dec. 4, will feature guest speakers Frank Van Nostrand and Joe Ford, Veterans Administration claims officer. Frank will again entertain us with a Social Security and Medicare update; discuss how to maximize benefits and some of the new programs and claims processes being implemented; and will provide valuable resources and retirement planning tools.
Joe’s presentation, “Opening Doors to Helping Clients with Veteran’s Benefits,” explains how practitioners can assist clients with time-saving suggestions when navigating the Veteran’s Benefits treacherous seas of administrative bureaucracy.
Our second session, Tuesday, Jan. 8, will feature attorneys Fay Blix, Wendy Hartmann and Diane Abbitt.
Fay’s discussion, “Client Competency: The Do’s and Don’ts,” will provide an understanding on how to identify and deal with clients who are in the early stages of mental impairments. Fay also has Medi-Cal eligibility news to share in light of California’s implementation of the Deficit Reduction Act provisions.
Wendy and Diane will make sense of new laws enacted by the California Legislature regarding family, probate, estate and tax laws affecting registered (and unregistered) domestic partners. This discussion is an invaluable planning tool when counseling elderly or same sex couples.
