Golf at Harding Park: Let’s Make It a Full Field!

Last year our golfers took over the entire course for the afternoon, with more than 140 players—and we’re aiming to do the same thing this year. You don’t need to have a foursome to sign up, as we’ll be glad to pair you up with other players. This is a scramble format, so everyone tees off and then the next shot is played from the best ball placement, so it’s a team effort, lots of fun and no stress!
   Sign up today.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Building a Network for Career Growth

By Sharon Selleck, CPA

As summer 2007 draws to a close, I want to tell you about two of our successful spring/summer events. If you missed these events, I hope you will be intrigued and get out of the office and attend one or more of our fall events!
In April we had our third annual Cinco de Mayo party and baseball game at Stanford University’s Sunken Diamond. At this event, we enjoy margaritas, tacos, fajitas and spent time with our friends and peers while watching some college baseball. We had many young and emerging professionals in attendance and filled the room and terrace with 50 CalCPA members and guests. What better way to spend a spring evening than outside watching baseball and chatting!
In June, we welcomed back to our chapter’s events the popular Attorney, Banker, CPA Networking Event, better known as ABC Night. After a few years on hiatus, ABC Night came back swinging with a sold-out crowd at the Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto. Taking over the courtyard on a beautiful June night were more than 130 attorneys, bankers, CPAs and financial planners, who enjoyed the food, warm weather and each other’s company. The chapter is excited to be able to bring this back as an annual event.
So, are you wishing you left the office and joined us? Wishing you told your husband or wife or significant other that you would be home two hours later one night? Well, summer may be over, but you still have a couple more chances before 2007 ends to have some fun with the chapter.
Here’s a sampling of what’s in store for Fall 2007:
We return to Bay Meadows Oct. 19 for our seventh Night at the Races event. One of our more popular events, and usually a sell-out, this is the occasion to recognize local college accounting students for their achievements and help them realize their goal of becoming a CPA by awarding scholarships and CalCPA student membership. After the awards ceremony and a great Bay Meadows buffet dinner, we will cheer on the jockeys and horses as they race around the track. This is a fun social evening and spouses and friends are welcome.
Also in planning is our annual Estate Planning Symposium—past events have included nationally recognized speakers or local experts for a panel discussion of estate planning issues. Each event has been a highly successful mix of education and networking. A date for this much anticipated event will be announced shortly.
A group of 25 chapter volunteers, spearheaded by our emerging professionals group, will be going to the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Carlos Nov. 28 to help organize food bins and pack boxes for delivery. We hope you will sign up for this event and join us to experience the benefit of both the networking aspect of working with your peers, as well as the feel-good aspect of giving back to the community. For the past eight years at my firm, we have closed the office for a day to volunteer in the community, and each time it has been a rewarding experience for my co-workers and me. This event will be for two hours in the evening right after work and is a great way to help a worthy organization, especially during the holiday season.
This is just a sampling of events. We also have monthly meetings of our chapter committees and Silicon Valley Forum Workshops. You can find these events and more on our chapter website And of course, if you would like to get involved on the planning side of any of these events, please contact me or chapter program associate Jane Dunbar. Hope to see you at one of these events in fall 2007!
