PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Surviving Tax Season: Top 10 Tips
As I write this, the holiday season is really getting going. We are in the midst of annual parties, gift exchanges and plates of goodies in the office. Unfortunately, by the time you are reading this column, tax season will be right on our doorsteps. Having been through many of them, I’ve developed some handy coping skills. So, as we prepare for the coming onslaught, here is my countdown of the top 10 tips for surviving tax season (with apologies to David Letterman):
No. 10: Thanks to the efficiencies of a paperless office, allow twice as much time to find last year’s work papers.
No. 9: Put an hour or more on your calendar each day for exercise. (Don’t be fooled: you’ll never have time to actually do the exercise, but at least you’ll have burned a few calories typing the appointments into your calendar.)
No. 8: Embrace the benefits of flex time. You get to work Saturday or Sunday—or both.
No. 7: Explain to your co-workers that the death penalty is not an appropriate punishment for accidentally making decaf.
No. 6: Label family photos in your office with the names of your loved ones so when April 15 rolls around, you may actually remember their names.
No. 5: When you reach your breaking point, think ahead to what a great time we’ll have on May 13 at CPA Day at the Capitol. Mark your calendars! Don’t miss it!
No. 4: Continually remind yourself that activities like skiing and golf are HIGHLY overrated and really just a big waste of time and money.
No. 3: Remember: E-file lottery can be just as much fun as going to Vegas!
No. 2: Enjoy your peeps. The pizza delivery guy and the after-hours office cleaning crew are going to be your new best friends.
And the No. 1 tip for surviving tax season: Two words: Tanning booth
