President’s Message

Communications

By Conrad Davis, CPA

One of my commitments to the Sacramento Chapter is to increase the level of communication to you, our members. Before you add me to your spam-blocking list, however, I assure you that I won’t be sending you a lot of junk mail. I primarily will be using existing communications. The other e-mails I will send will be directed to those people who have expressed interest in a particular area or who are in a specific interest group. This message is an update on some recent CalCPA events.

The CalCPA Council meeting was held June 21–23. Representatives from all over the state came together to share ideas, receive updates on issues facing CalCPA and the profession, and vote on some of these subjects. Several of the key issues are addressed in the report from the Strategic Vision Advisory Task Force. You can find the report on the CalCPA website, which, by the way, should be the new and improved website by the time you get this message.

There have been many changes to the website, including a return of the search function. The new design will make it easier for you to find information, as the interface is oriented toward function or task rather than by category. It will automatically adapt to your profile to highlight relevant information specific to you. These changes should increase the effectiveness of the website as a tool for communication between you, CalCPA and other CPAs.

At both the chapter president’s breakfast and state committee chair’s breakfast there was robust discussion of the need to pass along information from the state committees to our members. Many issues affecting your practice are discussed at these meetings. Much of this information is ultimately communicated to you or posted on the website. Our goal is for this information to come to you in a manner that is both timely and calls to the information to your attention.

Another issue I’m sure you are interested in is CPA mobility or state substantial equivalency. The California Board of Accountancy has conceptually approved following a Substantial Equivalency path. We now have to work on the legislative part of the solution, which means we need your involvement with CPA Day at the Capitol. Please put next year’s date on your calendar: May 13.
The Sacramento Chapter meeting was held June 20. I am highlighting just a couple of issues, so feel free to call or e-mail a board member to get more details. One big change is that we are going to have fewer chapter meetings. A perceived need or interest of the chapter members is for greater contact with each other. We are planning to have just a few meetings with a focus on making them productive for networking with other CPAs. We are still working on times and locations to determine how to best accomplish this. The other issue is greater committee involvement. The committees are one of the best ways to tap into CalCPA’s professional benefits. From the board side we will spend more time and effort to make sure the committee meetings satisfy your needs. Please consider helping the committee chairs by serving on a committee steering committee or just giving feedback to the chair on what you want or ideas you have.
