PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Qualified to Help

By Conrad Davis, CPA

Happy holidays! As I’m writing this, I’m looking forward to the next few weeks and spending a bit more time than usual with family and friends. I’m looking less forward to the five pounds or so that I’m sure to gain by the time we get to New Year’s Eve!
The holiday season is a great time to focus on our families and the families we encounter who, for whatever reason, have not been as fortunate as we have been. In our communities, this means taking the time to volunteer (as so many of you do) to serve a hot meal to the less fortunate, through financial gifts to a reputable charity or generous contributions of food, clothing and toys to local nonprofit organizations.
As CPAs, we are equipped and capable of giving back to our community in ways that others cannot. In the past few years, CalCPA has focused on a truly valuable endeavor that we can all participate in—improving financial literacy.
By volunteering to teach and mentor in our neighborhood schools, churches and community centers we can improve understanding of finances and basic money management for many people. This is an important way that we, as community leaders, are uniquely qualified to contribute and make a lasting impact in the lives of others.
For so many of you who are already working in the area of financial literacy—thank you! For those of you who would like to get involved, we need you! Please contact Crystil Turner, CalCPA’s community outreach manager, or visit the website. In addition, please mark your calendars for the April 23 Financial Literacy Summit in Sacramento. Plan to join your colleagues and focus on our role in helping improve financial literacy across the state.
As we approach a very busy time of the year, I hope you take time out to help in your community by serving the less fortunate. At the same time, I hope you pause to reflect on the true blessings in your life.
—Conrad Davis, CPA
