President’s Message
Hot August Nights
By Narelle E. MacKenzie, CPA
During this time of year I think of Neil Diamond and “Hot August Night.” We have some exciting events occurring during August encompassing technology, specifically mobility. Cliff Kaiser is chair of our Technology Committee and his insights about the use of technology are always practical and well developed. I am especially excited that part one in his mobility series is being offered in North County at the Shadowridge Country Club at a joint meeting with the B2B Forum. If you work in North County, consider attending the Aug. 23 event because as well as mobility, the meeting will cover employment issues of hiring and promoting the right people.
While on the subject of technology, I urge you to save the date of Sept. 18 for the chapter’s Sixth Annual Technology and Paperless Office Demo Day at the Handlery Hotel & Resort. This event offers six hours of CPE and covers topics ranging from choosing the paperless tools that work best for the CPA practice to developing workflow. Hands-on exhibits and a Microsoft mobile event will give you an opportunity to see and feel these state-of-the-art technology tools.
Our CalCPA Council representatives who attended the June Council meeting provided an update at the chapter’s July board meeting. CalCPA is working on initiatives with a focus on serving members who work in business and industry and also educators. Sharon Lightner, director of SDSU’s School of Accountancy and a member of the San Diego Chapter board, was part of the statewide education task force and we will provide an update in the September Bulletin.
As part of the focus on accounting education, the role members can play in this area is to sponsor a student or two at the chapter’s 5th Annual Student Day Friday, Sept. 28. Students will spend the morning at the offices of CPA members working in public practice and private industry and then we’ll all get together for lunch to talk about what they learned and hear from a panel of past CalCPA scholarship recipients who have started their accounting careers. Please watch your e-mail for details and sign up for this important event, as it is intended to inform students of the day in the life an accountant and encourage them to choose accounting as their major and career choice. Recruiting and hiring staff is a major challenge these days, both for public practitioners and business and industry members.
Financial literacy is another educational focus for CalCPA. As president of the San Diego chapter, I am proud to see San Diego's prominent presence in the list of the financial literacy efforts over the past year. Thank you to all of you who have made presentations at schools and other community groups over the past year. Educating the public on the importance of and understanding financial literacy is vital to so many in our community. There are ongoing programs and opportunities if you wish to present to the community on financial literacy. The financial literacy group in San Diego is chaired by Larry Kaplan and Carlos Gomez.
Hope you are able to keep your cool during these hot August nights as we enter the Sept. 15/Oct. 15 busy season.

Wanted: PFP Committee Chair
Are you a CPA who has an interest in financial planning issues? Would you like the chapter to provide more CPE on financial planning topics? If so, you have an opportunity to direct the content and volume of such events by taking a leadership role as chair of the chapter’s Personal Financial Planning Committee. The chair determines topics and speakers for the PFP luncheons, but you wouldn’t be going it alone as several of our local CPAs can help with contacts and ideas for content. As committee chair, your attendance is complimentary and you earn CPE for attending the events.
If you are interested, contact San Diego chapter board member Leslie Mittanck at (858) 875-2090.
