PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Opportunities to Get Plugged In
I really enjoy these last weeks of summer before the start of fall, with the last few lazy days before getting ready for back to school and the focus on the next few months of work.
We have an exciting time coming up in the next few weeks and I especially enjoy the New Member lunch. If you have joined CalCPA in the past year, please come to the New Member lunch Oct. 17. It is a great way to meet some other new members as well as some of the chapter leadership. I hope we see many new faces.
If you live or work in North County, I hope you can make it to the Member Networking event at the Rancho Bernardo Winery Oct. 25. Of course, any member is welcome to attend, but we are trying to ensure we have more events in North County to reach out to all our members.
With all the changes in the tax world, both paid preparer penalties and accounting for uncertain tax positions (FIN 48), it behooves each of us to stay current. I applaud Tax Committee Chair Melody Thornton for ensuring there are interesting and important topics presented by dynamic speakers at each meeting.
As most of you are aware I have an interest in (and a passion for) international tax, and this year I am serving on the committee for the 2007 International Tax and Business Conference with Kate Leonard. The program will be held in San Francisco Dec. 3, and there will be two tracks: an advanced international tax track and a business and industry track. If you work in international tax, either advising clients or working for a company doing business overseas, I encourage you to attend this conference. Attendance is expected to be about 200 people, which will provide a great opportunity to network with other CPAs in this practice area from around the state.
San Diego's International Business Committee chaired by Beth Smiley brings interesting international issues to our members locally. On Sept. 21, we hope you will join us as we travel down to the Tijuana Country Club by bus for the 13th Annual US-Mexico Conference. Sam Mascareno is doing a great job chairing this event. Also, we're planning a meeting with members of the San Diego Chapter of the Hong Kong Association on Oct. 30. At his third annual joint event, various experts will speak about 2007 New Developments in Doing Business in China for three hours of CPE.
Enjoy the last days of summer and the opportunities that fall brings for business and pleasure.
–Narelle E. MacKenzie, CPA
