Looks Like We Made It
By Mark Croce, CPA
Tax season 2007 now has a place in the history books. The early mornings and late nights we worked to prepare the many tax returns, the back-to-back client appointments, the waiting for the final K-1 to get things wrapped up, has ended. For the many tax season warriors out there, a vacation, a chance to catch up with family and a return to a normal work schedule are all signs that we have made it through another year! Congratulations to all. I hope that tax season 2007 was a rewarding and successful one for you.
Now is a wonderful time to take a moment and thank everyone for that extra effort put forth during the beginning of the year. Whether you are a tax practitioner or work primarily in attestation, consulting or industry, the beginning of the year can be a very busy and stressful time. Taking a moment to thank all of those you work with and to spend time with family and friends is a great way to energize yourself and others.
Speaking of becoming energized, there are several CalCPA events scheduled in the coming months that could really get things going.
First, the Young and Emerging Professionals Conference will be held in San Francisco May 9 and in Universal City May 11. This is the first year for this event, and as I mentioned in an earlier Bulletin, CalCPA is pulling out all of the stops. The conference is geared toward those CPAs who are licensed 0-5 years and will provide those attending with the tools to advance their careers and become active members of the CPA community. In addition, there will be sessions on public speaking, networking, relationship building and leadership. Please encourage members of your office to attend this very worthwhile conference.
Also, our chapter will host its annual installation/membership dinner and Past Presidents Night May 15. The event will be held at the Wine Visitor Center, which is part of Wine and Roses Inn and Spa, in Lodi. Please plan to attend this great social event. Come reacquaint yourself with other members and support your chapter as we install Tara Eastwood as the 2007-08 chapter president, along with Michelle Moard (vice president) and Chrissy Stiles (secretary/treasurer). In addition, Wine and Roses is a very nice place for an overnight stay. Come to the event and stay overnight—you can have a mini-vacation!
Interested in politics? How about meeting in Sacramento with members from throughout the state for CPA Day at the Capitol May 29? Join with hundreds of CPAs as we make our presence known in Sacramento and talk with legislators and regulators about issues affecting our profession. Find more information at www.calcpa.org.
In addition, the next CalCPA Council meeting will be June 22-23 in Seattle. Although many members think that council meetings are only for those on CalCPA Council, all members are invited to attend. Come see how CalCPA works at the state level and learn what your peers across the state are doing in their practices. You can also learn more about legislation and other issues that are impacting our profession. These meetings are full of information and are a lot of fun. I encourage all who are interested to attend.
Finally, do not forget to renew your membership. I know that many of us get our renewal information during our busiest time of the year. However, if your membership renewal is buried in your inbox, pull it out, dust it off and send it in today! Thank you to all who have already renewed their membership, along with all who will do so soon. It is only through the power of membership that CalCPA is able to continue the valuable programs and services available to us.

CPA Day at the Capitol [PDF]
Help legislators understand the issues facing California CPAs by joining us May 29 for CPA Day at the Capitol.
CPA Day at the Capitol is your opportunity to speak with legislators and their staff on issues important to you as a California CPA. You will be briefed on current issues and then assigned to teams to meet with the legislators. Together we can help them understand the impact and unintended consequences that well–meaning laws and regulations can have and we’ll establish meaningful relationships for the future.
Please register as early as possible to allow CalCPA time to assign you to teams and schedule appointments with legislators.
Register today at www.calcpa.org/cpaday.
