PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Have CPA, Will Travel

By Roger Laux, CPA

I know you all wait, with baited breath, for the California CPA magazine to arrive each month to pour through the pages in between your review of Popular Mechanics and Martha Stewarts Living. I’m just being a wise guy (what’s new). If you haven’t yet done your monthly reading, I want to call your attention to an article by Bruce Allen, CalCPA’s director of government relations, in the December issue.
Allen’s article concerns conformity for CPAs and mobility for CPAs between the states. You might think (like I did) that mobility to practice outside of California would be an issue confined mostly to the top three tiers or so of CPA firms. I was amazed to learn that interstate mobility has become a reality for smaller firms and even sole practitioners.
The expanded horizons of California CPAs can be linked in part to the migration patterns of their clients. Many individuals and businesses have chosen to relocate outside of California to stretch the spending power of their retirement income, find a better environment for their business or just to get a change of scenery. As any of you who have experienced a major relocation know, it is vitally important to find a good mechanic, a good dentist, a good barber (at least for some of you) and a good CPA. Hence, a lot of clients that started out here are now happily residing in other states like Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and even Minnesota.
The AICPA and National Association of State Boards of Accountancy have revised the Uniform Accountancy Act to allow CPAs to provide services across state lines with fewer restrictions. One of the issues still hindering California CPAs in providing client services outside of California is the statutes of the California CPA licensing laws. California is one of only five states that have not adopted the 150-hour education requirement (basically a bachelor’s degree plus 30 hours) for CPA licensing.
Neither of my parents attended high school, which was not completely unique to their generation in the farming communities of the midwest. But now, a college degree is practically a minimum requirement for any professional. So, a five-year college requirement for CPA certification does not seem out of line.
California is also one of only 11 states that does not have a peer review requirement. The CBA is pushing for the adoption of these educational and peer review requirements for California CPAs by the year 2012. All CPAs prior to 2012 would be grandfathered in.
To me, it seems like California, often known as being on the cutting edge of most movements, is behind the curve on this one. Uniformity between states gives CPAs freedom of movement that may easily affect any one of us. I urge you to become familiar with and support these proposals and the legislation that should be introduced next year to make them a reality.
I hope your kickoff of the new year is a great one.
—Roger Laux

Interns Available

By Michael Gray, SVSJ Chapter past president

San Jose State University offers a master’s degree in accounting accelerated program that includes a break during tax season so students can work full time and get experience in accounting positions. I have been using interns since 1978, and this is a great way to get temporary help during tax season, screen potential future employees and help emerging professionals build enthusiasm for our profession.
If you’re interested in offering an internship to these students, contact Tom Moschetti at (408) 924-3492 or e-mail him.
Chapter program associate Stephanie Stewart has a collection of résumés from Santa Clara University students who are seeking internships. For details, call Stephanie at (408) 983-1122.
Job listings for San Jose State University students can be posted online. The SJSU career center telephone number is (408) 924-6034. Job listings for Santa Clara University students can be posted online or call the university’s career center at (408) 554-4420.
And lastly, CalCPA student members can post résumés online for free for 30 days. Visit CalCPA’s classifieds and click on “situations wanted.” Employers can see the resumes posted by students at no charge at www.calcpa.org.

Meet the Board: David R. Koehler

There was a time, years ago, when you may have had David R. Koehler bus your table at the old Le Baron Hotel in San Jose. That was Koehler’s first job. His best job was being a disc jockey before he studied accounting at Santa Clara University, but only after he “flailed” around in engineering for a year and then switched to a business major. “I latched on to accounting since it was the most challenging” he says.
Koehler graduated, became a CPA and landed in public accounting working for McCahan Helfrick Thiercof & Butera for five years. Koehler then started his own firm, Koehler & Associates, CPAs, in 1994.
A successful CPA, in Koehler’s opinion, means, “having communication skills backed up by technical expertise and experience.” And his job continues to be an inspiration to him as he is motivated by “helping people map out their personal and financial goals and take action.”
Koehler is also inspired by the creation of new ventures and, in his words, “on the home front, watching my two children develop and learn new things.”
Home is also where Koehler’s hero—his wife, Toby—lives. “She juggles the kids, household, me and her duties at our growing accounting office,” says Koehler.
When it’s all said and done, Koehler hopes to be remembered as “straight forward, honest and dedicated to his clients. As someone who built long-term personal and professional relationships with clients by keeping their best interests in mind through the many years during our time together,” he says. “I want to be remembered as being a good, responsible provider for my family as well as being part of the community that I live in.”

2008–09 Slate of Leaders

If approved, David F. Veyna, Donna S. Bumgarner and Roger A. Laux would also represent our chapter by serving on CalCPA Council.

Rhonda A. Richards
Carol Wagner

(second year of a two-year term):
Jeffrey K. Ford (filling the second year of a vacated two-year term)
John S. Haydon
David R. Koehler

Eligible chapter members will receive a separate announcement by e–mail later this month asking for the approval of the proposed slate. As we look toward next year, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our current board members who continue to serve this year.

Tax-Aid Expands to San Jose

Tax-Aid, a local nonprofit coalition of CPAs and attorneys that was created to help low-income families prepare their tax returns, is expanding into Santa Clara County with its first site in San Jose.
The site will be sponsored by Deloitte Tax LLP and is expected to be held at the downtown Salvation Army. Tax-Aid president Kenneth Lee, CPA, says volunteers are still needed at all of the Tax-Aid sites.
Volunteering is easy. Tax-Aid provides the equipment and training. Volunteers are expected to donate at least two Saturdays during tax season.
Chapter members interested in participating in Tax-Aid can go online to register or call Minnie Sage at (415) 963-5133. Members who are unable to volunteer, but wish to help, can send a tax-deductible contribution to Tax-Aid; 55 Second St., Suite 1400; San Francisco, CA 94105 or donate online.
