PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?

By Roger Laux

If you read this article and find that it is news to you, I’m sorry to tell you that you just missed the annual highlight of our chapter events: Honorees Night.
During the Jan. 23 event we acknowledged our chapter’s past presidents (who were treated to a free dinner, I might add) and announced chapter members who have reached 40 years of CalCPA membership, which gives them lifetime free membership (even better than the free dinner).
Tony Yau (co-founder of Johanson and Yau) was honored with this year’s lifetime achievement award and gave us a nice trip down memory lane (nice 10-key you have there, Tony). We were also honored to have former CalCPA Chair Mark Parkinson and CalCPA CEO Loretta Doon in attendance. CalCPA Chair Teresa Mason also addressed the crowd of nearly 140 people.
The real highlight of the evening, however, was the awarding of scholarships to accounting students from the nine community colleges and four universities in and around the Silicon Valley/San Jose region. Ben Mozzetti did a great job as chair of this event and master of ceremonies. There were 17 scholarship awards granted and more than $41,000 in cash awards were distributed. The awards total has grown substantially in each of the 10 years that this program has been in effect. Of CalCPA’s 14 state chapters, the Silicon Valley/San Jose scholarship awards represent approximately 18 percent of the total state scholarship awards. We are very proud of that. The major sources of these funds are the two semiannual ABC events, the chapter’s annual golf tournament and the chapter’s BARE educational event.
The scholarship winners were determined based on recommendations from each school’s accounting professors, and it became obvious that scholastic achievement was a major criteria. It was amazing, while listening to a brief bio on each of the recipients, how many 3.8, 3.9 and 4.0 grade point averages were being touted. What’s more amazing is that these grade points are on a 4.0 system. While some of the recipients are dedicating their efforts solely to academics, a number of them are also involved in volunteer work and other interesting activities.
It was a great event, an excellent opportunity to recognize past achievements and new achievers and a chance to have a short visit with some familiar faces. If you regret missing this season’s highlight (and you should), put a tickler in your file for next January. We’ll do it again.
   Stay well,
—Roger Laux

Meet the Board: James A. Martin

James A. Martin, tax partner at Burr, Pilger & Mayer, LLP, knew he wanted to be a CPA when he was in high school—it was his first career ambition.
Martin attended University of Redlands and majored in accounting and economics. Being a CPA is the best job he has ever had, he says, and believes being successful means, “being able to take the time to learn about your clients and business and then using that knowledge to help clients grow and make sound financial decisions.”
Martin wants to be remembered for his hard work and fairness to the people who work with him. He says people describe him as “being able to explain complex tax issues in an easy-to-understand manner.”
Martin also volunteers his time at the YMCA’s Los Altos Education Foundation.
