PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Some Day Young Man (Woman) ...

By Roger Laux

... all of this will be yours.
We had a great turnout recently at our chapter’s annual Attorney, Banker & CPAs (ABC) Fallfest, which, pending final audit of course, was a grand success. I expect that it should provide a significant addition to the chapter scholarship fund.
Just prior to the Fallfest, we hosted a new-member orientation and invited all chapter members who joined in the past year. The purpose of the orientation was two-fold: to afford new members a chance to meet some of our chapter’s governing body and to enlighten them regarding the resources and opportunities that CalCPA has to offer.
Many new members and a good representation of the chapter board and committee chairs were there. For many of these new members, it was the first CalCPA related function they had attended. It probably helped that all new members who attended could use a voucher they received as part of their new-member packet for admission into the ABC event following the orientation. You always get better attendance when you offer food. We did get positive feedback that the orientation was beneficial and gave those attending an appreciation that they are getting some bang for their buck by being a part of CalCPA.
The rest of the evening was great. Some of us reminisced about joining Peat, Marwick back when pastel dress shirts were still practically avante gard as the white shirt rule had been relaxed. In those days, you wouldn’t dream of showing up at a client’s office in a sport coat and tie versus a suit and tie (where do you think you are son, at a country club?). Ah, well, those were the good old days. Reality hit recently when I observed a young woman at a client’s office with a tattoo on her back. She was one of the client’s external auditors from a regional firm. How can you tell the Christians from the lions, when they all dress alike? Anyway, I digress (again. Dang).
There is a changing of the guard in process and there are a lot of new, young people coming into the profession. Looks like a great opportunity for us sage, old (er, I mean experienced) CPAs out there to reach out and do some mentoring. The new members may primarily be concerned with their near-term advancement opportunities and may not be thinking seriously enough about the foundations they are laying for the long term. There has been a tremendous example of mentoring set by Silicon Valley CPAs whose influence reached well beyond their professional horizons.
Our chapter’s lifetime achievement award winners for the past three or four years are part of that group. So follow their example, pick a few fresh new accountants or two (tattoos and all) and take the opportunity to help round them out as great accountants and fine citizens. In addition to the obvious benefits for them, it may help to keep you young. A little osmosis never hurt anybody.
Have a great holiday season. (Hey, is that an ear piercing I see there, buddy?)
—Roger Laux

Interns Available

By Michael Gray, SVSJ Chapter past president

San Jose State University offers a master’s degree in accounting accelerated program that includes a break during tax season so students can work full time and get experience in accounting positions. I have been using interns since 1978, and this is a great way to get temporary help during tax season, screen potential future employees and help emerging professionals build enthusiasm for our profession.
If you’re interested in offering an internship to these students, contact Tom Moschetti at (408) 924-3492 or e-mail him.
Chapter program associate Stephanie Stewart has a collection of résumés from Santa Clara University students who are seeking internships. For details, call Stephanie at (408) 983-1122.
Job listings for San Jose State University students can be posted online. The SJSU career center telephone number is (408) 924-6034. Job listings for Santa Clara University students can be posted online or call the university’s career center at (408) 554-4420.
And lastly, CalCPA student members can post résumés online for free for 30 days. Visit CalCPA’s classifieds and click on “situations wanted.” Employers can see the resumes posted by students at no charge at www.calcpa.org.

Board of Directors Nominations

Chapter members may nominate a candidate for chapter director. Candidates must be a licensed CPA and a member in good standing. Please submit nominations—by Dec. 15—to chapter program associate Stephanie Stewart.

A Season of Giving: Charitable Contributions

During this time of the year many of you donate to your favorite organization to touch lives and build futures. Please consider giving back to the profession. Make a direct year-end donation to the chapter’s scholarship fund. Download a contribution flier.

Meet the Board: Phil Hulme

Phil Hulme is a senior investment adviser for Presidio Exchange Advisors, specializing in tenant-in-common replacement properties for 1031 exchange investors, though he started out washing dishes at Jolly Hot Dogs at age 14. He majored in accounting at San Jose State University and decided to become a CPA while serving an internship at Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
He realized his first career ambition of being self-employed after he left PWC by building his own practice, which he later merged with Ruzzo, Scholl and Murphy. Along with his CPA license, Hulme has a real estate license and securities registrations.
Hulme’s hero is Richard Branson because he’s inspired by entrepreneurship and people with the inspiration and drive to excel. Hulme says people describe him as “having a wide range of interests, someone who works hard, plays hard and is a dedicated father.” He wants to be remembered for supporting his children in their ambitions and giving them well-rounded experiences in life.
