The Santa Barbara Foundation has an immediate opening for a Senior Accountant. This position reports directly to the CFO. The senior accountant assists the CFO and supports the Finance Team in performing and reviewing various accounting activities and developing written process documentation.

This is a full-time, exempt position with a rich benefits package that includes medical/dental/vision coverage, STD/LTD/AD&D, 401K plan with employer matching options and 12 paid holidays per year. Part-time considered for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as backup staff for various finance processes as assigned, such as cash receipts, cash disbursements, accounts payable, grants payable, payroll and new fund creation.
  • Assists the CFO during the Foundation’s annual financial audit performed by an outside independent auditor, by preparing schedules, gathering information, drafting and/or reviewing draft audited financial statements and footnote disclosures, and reconciling amounts and information to financial records and supporting schedules.
  • Assists the CFO with the annual preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and other federal, state and local tax and information returns, by preparing schedules, gathering information, drafting and/or reviewing the returns, and reconciling amounts and information to financial records and supporting schedules.
  • Develops, reviews and updates written policies and procedures.
  • Prepares/reviews monthly reports for giving groups and Community Investment Officers.
  • Prepares/reviews monthly budget vs actual reports for operating funds and discretionary grants.
  • Assists the CFO as needed in preparing and administering the annual budget.
  • Assists the CFO in preparing for Finance Committee meetings by reviewing internal financial statements and narratives and performing actual vs. budget variance analyses.
  • Supports the CFO and Finance Team by reviewing general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, allocations and donor statements, mentoring staff, and recommending process improvements.
  • Completes various financial surveys for the Council on Foundations, government agencies, etc.
  • Other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • CPA license or certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Public accounting experience
  • Non-profit fund accounting experience
  • Community foundation experience
  • Proficiency with MS Excel (pivot tables and v-lookups)
  • Proficiency with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge and Fusion Labs GrantedGE
  • Professional attitude and appearance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Santa Barbara County resident
