Our strategic goal is to ensure that 3.5 million children in 7,000 schools experience safe and healthy play every day by December 2020. This position will play a pivotal role in getting to that goal.

We create a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills. We partner with schools, districts, and after-school programs to provide a service or mix of services including on-site coaches, professional training for school staff who support recess, and consultative partnerships.

Here’s where you come in:

As the Controller of Playworks you will be responsible for oversight of all accounting, auditing, and reporting activities. You will lead all day-to-day accounting operations of a budget of $45+ million, 23 offices, hundreds of customers and grants, and supervise a team of 5+ staff members including functional responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. You’ll also partner with the CFO to support reporting and presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the Playworks executive team.

In this critical position, you’ll ensure that Playworks has the systems, policies, and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. To accomplish this goal you’ll work closely with program leaders and staff, not only to support them regarding financial management and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations and to enhance collaboration across the organization.

This role reports to the CFO and is a key member of the Mission Support Team, which includes the Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, IT, Legal, and Operations departments.

Specific Responsibilities:

Management

  • Leverage strengths of the current Finance team members, manage roles and responsibilities and develop professional development support to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals;
  • Collaborate with leaders across Playworks to improve financial management processes and systems to achieve organizational goals.

Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity, which includes U.S. Government audits.
  • Design, update, and implement accounting and operations policies and procedures.
  • Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep the Executive team abreast of Playworks financial status;
  • Support the Financial Planning & Analysis team by working in partnership with the program executives and the Development department.
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a leader with five to ten years of accounting and management experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. We are looking for someone who has experience managing teams and developing direct reports into high performers. You will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs across multiple geographies.

Other required skills & experience include:

  • Minimum of a BA/BS and CPA. Active California CPA license preferred.
  • A proven change agent that thrives in a fun, dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and unwavering commitment to Playworks’ mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for accounting.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities, including compliance with OMB Circular A-133.
  • Success in managing reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger and payroll.
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
  • Technology savvy with experience; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software, esp. Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Concur, and Adaptive Insights. Expert level Excel knowledge.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills that allow for strategic data interpretation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to Executives, board or other outside partners.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.

Typical Physical & Mental Demands: Requires prolonged sitting with some bending, stooping and stretching, and eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, photocopier, and other office equipment.
