Under the general direction of the Vice President, Finance, the Director, Finance is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the Finance department including the tactical responsibilities of the financial operations and controls.  The Director, Finance is responsible to ensure timely, accurate, and transparent financial information and proper stewardship over corporate assets. The Director, Finance, is a key team member whose information and insights will help the organization to make informed, data-based decisions regarding strategic initiatives, optimize improvement efforts, and appropriate re-deployment of resources.


  • Lead, develop, and coach the Finance and Gift Processing team; goal is operational excellence
  • Direct comprehensive analysis of ROI of various events and programs, ensuring evaluation of any unfunded programmatic costs utilizing full cost funding rubric
  • Direct implementation and execution of programs and events budgets and expenses in Financial Planning and Analysis tool (Vena)
  • Conduct complex financial cost/benefit analyses, forecast and modeling to support growth and other strategic initiatives
  • Evaluate, develop, and enforce organizational financial policies and procedures and maximize utilization of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness
  • Play a major role in the preparation of the annual operating budget and annual funding budget
  • Manage organization’s operating budget and actual expenses while maintaining cost containment
  • Prepare meeting materials and actively participate in the Audit Committee meetings
  • Manage and coordinate all interactions and activities related to donations of stock, including partnering with Major Gifts, the brokerage firm, etc.
  • Manage year-end financial statements audit and act as primary contact for external auditors
  • Prepare annual audited financial statements and Form 990, for ultimate review and submission by the Vice President, Finance
  • Manage allocation of expenses into functional expense cost centers and prepare reports
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, including Accounts Payable, Pledge Receivables, general accounting, etc.
  • Ensure the timely preparation of accurate and transparent financial statements; evaluate and resolve any potential discrepancies.
  • Manage contract review process, including analysis for improvements to minimize organization’s business risk
  • Direct completion of annual solicitation permit applications and General Liability and Workers’ Compensation insurance renewals
  • Ensure proper internal controls exist throughout the organization to safeguard company assets
  • Support Vice President, Finance and the Executive Team with ad hoc projects and reports
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience including at least 5 years in an Accounting/Finance function required; Must have either CPA license or experience at a Public Accounting firm
  • Minimum 3 years leading and developing a high performing team
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, lead, and mentor a diverse team to achieve professional growth and meet performance expectations
  • Be an excellent analyst, capable of imagining innovative ways to get at and use financial information both to measure performance over time, and to assist with forecasting, budgeting, and managing resources
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and maintain effective relationships with all departments and employees in a diverse team-oriented environment
  • Ability to educate management team on financial, accounting, and budget matters and assist their departments in being fiscally responsible
  • Demonstrated capability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all appropriate external partners, e.g. external auditors, tax accountants, bankers, insurance brokers, etc.
  • Self-motivated and independent, with excellent prioritization, project management and critical thinking skills, a strong sense of focus, organization, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with the ability to communicate strategy, tactics, and results with clarity for a variety of audiences
  • Enthusiastic team player with positive can-do attitude, flexibility to re-prioritize, multi-task and switch tasks fluidly, including ability to hit the ground running
  • Ability to creatively troubleshoot and work in a fast-paced environment with numerous deadlines
  • Superior knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) is essential; previous experience with FP & A tool, e.g. Vena, is a plus
