COUNCIL

January 2023 Activities & Hotel Information
CalCPA’s next Council meeting, held in conjunction with CPA Day at the Capitol, will be on Jan. 17-18 at the SAFE Convention Center in Sacramento. The Council meeting will begin at 11 a.m. (with breakfast at 9 a.m).

Nomination interviews for Board of Director positions will take place on the afternoon of Jan. 18 and the Nominations Committee will meet for deliberations on Jan. 19.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

Two-Year Bridge Symposium
The Center for Accounting Diversity hosted a Two-Year Bridge Symposium at Deloitte’s San Francisco office on Nov. 4. The event exposed 25 community college students from throughout California to the accounting/CPA profession via exercises and speakers. David Lo represented CalCPA at the event and addressed specific licensure questions.

Meet the Firms at East Los Angeles College
CalCPA, in cooperation with the accounting department at East Los Angeles College, hosted a Meet the Firms event on campus on Oct. 26. The event drew 100 college and high school students from the Elizabeth Learning Center in the nearby city of Cudahy. Special thanks to LA Chapter President Keith Hamasaki, Cerritos Adjunct Accounting instructor Charlie Osaki, CalCPA Accounting Education Committee member Garrett Shakstad, Citrin Cooperman, KROST, HCVT, EY and Baker Tilly for their contributions. 

From Community College to CPA at Evergreen Valley College
CalCPA hosted it’s From Community College to CPA event at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose on Oct. 27. The event was attended by more than 60 students at the school as well as from nearby Foothill College. The program introduced the students to the CPA profession and the steps they could take as community college students toward that goal. Speakers and panelists included Silicon Valley/San Jose Chapter members, San Jose State and CSU East Bay transfer students, and a representative from PwC. 

Bringing Pride to Accounting
CalCPA recently participated in Palm Springs Pride to help build a community of belonging within the profession. Palm Springs was the fourth Pride event of the year with previous participation in San Francisco, Long Beach and San Diego. CalCPA interacted with hundreds of past, present and future CPAs, and raised brand awareness by the tens of thousands in each city. The mission was to Bring Pride to Accounting ... mission accomplished!


GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

CPA Day Planning
With the start of a new legislative session and many new faces in the capitol, CalCPA’s Government Relations team will be working to facilitate opportunities for CalCPA member leaders to meet with key policymakers and outline legislative areas of interest for the CPA profession. Keep an eye on upcoming CalCPA communications about details for this event and how you can participate.

2022 Election Results

Legislature

Democrats will retain a supermajority in both the Assembly and the Senate. There will be 30 freshmen legislators. Each house will meet briefly in December for a swearing-in ceremony and to kick off the 2023-24 legislative session. Bill introductions and legislative business will begin in January.

INSTITUTE

CalCPA Institute Fundraising
Help CalCPA Fund the Future by supporting DE&I, student and pipeline initiatives. CalCPA Institute's mission to Fund the Future is a shared endeavor with every member of CalCPA and success depends on the unified effort of the entire profession.

Industry Influencer Program 
The 2022-23 Industry Influencer Program is off and running with a new name, new voice and new objective. Currently, 30 Influencers across the state are working to drive brand and profession awareness at their local universities and community colleges. More influencers will be onboarded throughout the year and will be working hard to redefine what it means to be a modern student eyeing a career in the CPA profession.

CalCPA Pipeline Task Force
The new CalCPA Pipeline Task Force held its inaugural meeting in November. Volunteer members serving on the task force include:

     •  Miklos Ringbauer
     •  Brandon Holland

The task force reviewed several Institute team initiatives and wins-to-date and discussed a high-level plan for a corporate fundraising strategy. This experienced group of CalCPA members will get together a few times a year to share pipeline feedback, thoughts and ideas with the Institute team.

In November, five CalCPA advertising clients were recognized for their outstanding advertisements in the September 2022 issue of California CPA magazine. A total of 16 ads were studied by our readers in the ad effectiveness study conducted by Readex Research. The readers reported their perceptions of whether the ads were attention-getting, believable or informative. STATE COMMITTEES/SECTIONS

State Committee Application | 2023-24
The state committee application period is open through Dec. 31. Committee appointments will be made in January/February, with terms beginning on May 1. You can apply here.

Please note: The application is for at-large state committee membership. Chapter representatives do not need to complete an application unless they would like to apply to other state committees. 


Personal Financial Planning (PFP)
The PFP Committee offers free monthly presentations on the third Tuesday of every month. Past presentations are recorded and posted (along with the materials) on CalCPA's website.

Dec. 13 | 2022 Recap and 2023 Outlook of the Investment Market
 
Estate Planning 
The committee is hard at work developing its charter so that the committee members have action items and deliverables. The Connect platform for Estate Planning is in test mode and should be ready soon. There is conversation of developing an “Intro to Estate Planning” course that could be added to the Foundation’s On-Demand library. The committee is committed to helping young professionals with resources on how to decide if estate planning is the right practice area for them.

Forensic Services Section (FSS)
The Forensic Services Section is accepting applications until Dec. 30 to join the Steering Committee as a member-at-large. You can apply here

   Upcoming Virtual Presentation:
  • Jan. 12 | FSS Young and Emerging Professionals (YEP): First Impressions and Managing Up (Free for FSS members)

  • The Forensic Expert Leadership Program is designed to help forensic accounting professionals expand their practice and prepare for career development as testifying experts through interactive components such as the opportunity to practice testimony on video, get analyzed by a body language specialist and participate in a mock trial with a judicial representative. The program consists of five days across two sessions and is limited to 20 forensic accounting professionals with at least three years of experience. Program dates/locations:

    Session 1: Sept. 14-15 in Irvine
    Session 2: Oct. 5-7 in San Diego
Young & Emerging Professionals (YEP) 
The committee met in Los Angeles on Oct. 28 for the first in-person meeting since the committee’s inception. Members from across the state joined together and on Zoom to build the committee charter and set the course for the future.

The YEP Committee mission is to cultivate a supportive community and provide robust resources for young & emerging professionals. We embrace the modern accountant and will guide the next generation through discovery to the vast opportunities within the profession and beyond.
