Fundraising Season is in Full Swing

Greetings, fellow Inland Empire Chapter members.

I imagine that if I could ask each of you why you are a member of CalCPA, I’d get a variety of responses. If you are a member who is personally paying for access to California’s preeminent member’s club for CPAs, you would likely easily respond with a list of benefits you enjoy. If your employer has provided membership to you, then they must see tremendous value in you and your career development. If it’s been a while since you took advantage of your benefits in CalCPA, there are so many, and you can find a list of them on the new CalCPA website, but here are a few of my personal favorites.

Modern technology provides us with so many ways for us to learn new things. Have you ever started researching something and found yourself down a rabbit hole leading you to a plethora of information that was deeper than you ever imagined? Maybe that’s even happened to you on a topic in our own industry. I recently found myself down the artificial intelligence (AI) rabbit hole, and it was both exciting and overwhelming as I considered how this technology will help our profession advance. I’m looking forward to seeing how others in our profession will leverage this technology for the good of our members and those we love to serve. I'd love to hear if you’re already traveling this path and have a story about your experience utilizing AI.

For as long as I’ve been part of this profession, even way back to my student years, the Fall season has been the premiere time for students and working professionals to connect with one another. There is something quite energizing about a new school year that seems to work perfectly with Meet the Firms events and other job fairs, firm tours, and company site visits.

, I’d like to encourage you to attend and participate in as many of these activities and events as you can. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a job now or years from now, these events all provide an invaluable opportunity to practice your networking and net weaving skills. I understand it can feel intimidating to start and carry-on a conversation with someone you’ve never met but let me reassure you that the people you need to talk with still remember what it feels like to be where you are, and they are there because they want to connect with you. If you ever find yourself struggling with how to start a natural conversation, try asking open-ended questions that get the person to share something about themselves. After briefly introducing yourself, try asking “What do you like best about your work?”, or “What was something that surprised you about the profession once you started working?”. These open-ending questions will give you more time to compose yourself and prepare for continuing the conversation. 

Your IE Chapter board has planned several events where members of all experience levels gather for good company and conversation. These are excellent opportunities for 

 to participate and connect with people that can guide and support you on your pathway to CPA. The next event is at a new venue for us this year,

The weather is cooling, a few leaves have fallen, schools are in session, a second busy season is ahead, all signs that Fall has arrived. Love it or not-so-much, the California storms last Winter offered tax pros a break in the first busy season, but perhaps has created a larger second busy season for some. Between tax, audit, industry, and scholastic deadlines, this is a time our members really step up, stand out, and help others. You are part of a profession that deeply cares about helping people, and that is wonderfully inspiring.

Fall brings a lot of energy as people connect through so many ways. Our most recent chapter event, the ABC night, took place on September 28 at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside. We were blessed with perfect weather and even better company. Conversations were buzzing continuously, many new connections were made, and old connections were reignited. Over 120 members, guests, and sponsors supported our chapter’s scholarship fundraising ABC night, helping to change the lives for students in accounting. This would not be possible without the generous support of our event sponsors. On behalf of the chapter members, we express much appreciation to our Platinum sponsors 

Last year our chapter awarded $23,000 in scholarships, up over the prior year awards of $20,750. We would love to push that amount up to (or over) $25,000 this year. One way you can help is by golfing. Did you know that our annual golf tournament is our chapter’s largest fundraising event of the year? By golfing or sponsoring (or both), you are 

 playing, eating, and drinking on a premiere course, 

 the lives of students and supporting the pipeline of future accounting professionals. Watch your email for more information about the IE Chapter Golf Tournament on October 30, 2023. You don’t even have to play golf to come and create great memories.
