DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
The AICPA hosted its 2022 Accounting Pipeline and Diversity Symposium in conjunction with their Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop on October 12-13 at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona. The Symposium provided a platform for professionals from organizations, universities and state societies to collaborate, explore best practices, and identify ways to overcome obstacles in filling the accounting pipeline with diverse students and professionals.
This was a great opportunity for students and practitioners to meet, build relationships and perhaps become a mentor or a mentee. Cheryl Smith attended this year on behalf of the CalCPA Institute Team.
If your firm is interested in participating in our ongoing student outreach initiatives, please contact Collin Stephens, Manager of DE&I, Pipeline and Engagement.
Pride Event in Palm Springs
CalCPA will participate in Palm Springs Pride the weekend of November 4-6. If you would like to join the cause in bringing pride to accounting, contact Collin Stephens for more information.
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
PTET Cleanup
Late last month, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 851 into law, proving a technical modification to correct an oversight in the drafting of California’s elective pass-through entity tax (PTET) framework. Specifically, SB 851 clarifies the interplay of credits derived from the PTET with existing taxpayer credits resulting from the other state tax credit (OSTC). This clarification is necessary to ensure that the PTET effectively provides meaningful tax relief as the Legislature and the Administration intended.
Since adopting the PTET framework, CalCPA and its members have provided a unique perspective to the legislature and the FTB from their experiences working with clients of all sizes to evaluate and apply the PTET framework. With this knowledge, we have sought ways to refine the PTET and build on the work of the legislature and the administration to provide relief to taxpayers and small businesses across the state. SB 851 aligns with these efforts and takes an essential step in ensuring an effective and administrable PTET framework.
